Galveston
Galveston is the land characterized for the people who respond with undiminished enthusiasm. When there's a party, the people take part actively. People here organize their whole year around these festivals and celebrations. Galveston is a great place to visit, experience and enjoy. Whether you're in the mood for museum hopping or antique shopping, cultural adventures or sporting pleasures, history, mystery, artistry, you will find all things together at just one place. A city rich in traditions and culture welcome out-of-towners to come over and see its majestic scale for themselves.
Located along the Gulf Coast region in the U.S. state of Texas, Galveston is a city of Galveston County. The region is known for its historic neighborhoods and a ten-mile or 16 km long, 17 foot high seawall. The seawall was designed to protect the city from floods and hurricane storm surge. According to 2005 US estimates, 57,466 inhabitants made up the city's total population, making it the second largest city of Galveston County.
The city features a diverse range of tourist attractions including the Galveston Schlitterbahn waterpark, Moody Gardens botanical park, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum, the Lone Star Flight Museum, many historical museums and mansions, and miles of beach front. The downtown neighborhood of historic buildings is called 'the Strand' which hosts annually Mardi Gras festival, Galveston Island Jazz & Blues Festival, Texas Beach Fest, Lone Star Bike Rally, and 'Dickens on the Strand'
If you're new to Galveston it is recommended for the visitors to get oriented with a trip to one of the two Galveston Island Visitors Centers. Both Street Visitor Center and Strand Visitor Center are operated by the Galveston Island Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The 2027 61st Street Visitors Center is a right place for you if planning beach playday. Head to the 215 Strand Visitors Center, if you want to explore Galveston's historic shopping and art districts. Both centers provide a wealth of brochures, free maps of the Island, and friendly guides.
Galveston Island is widely characterized distinctly for its 32 miles of beautiful Gulf beaches. To insure the safety of vacationers and encourage more families to Galveston Island beaches, the City Council together with the Galveston Park Board of Trustees has cooperatively banned alcohol consumption from most public beaches and the Seawall. However, the exception of licensed concession areas is also there.
In the City, you may also find two top destinations: the 242-acre Moody Gardens and the newly-opened Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark. Moody Gardens is a vacation all by itself as it is partly theme park, partly educational and rehabilitative facility, partly pleasure garden. Schlitterbahn, on the other hand, is the first waterpark of its kind, open to everyone year round. Galveston is also home to the Balinese Room, a historic nightclub, located on a 600-foot (200 m) pier extending into the Gulf of Mexico.
Stroll through the 36-square-block area of downtown Galveston and explore the enticing shops on the Strand and the contemporary Postoffice Arts District. Be it upscale, artsy or beach trendy, you name your taste and Galveston has it. The area offers shopping for almost everyone's tastes. Visitors can expect to find wonderful antique and curio stores and look for treasures both downtown and on Broadway in a city individual in its tastes.
In Galveston, there are lots of places offering delectable food to satisfy your taste buds. The specialty is fresh-cooked, fresh caught Gulf Coast cuisine that you can have both in traditional and nouvelle settings.
