Dutch violinist and conductor, Andre Rieu was born October 1, 1949, in Maastricht, Netherlands.
Famous for creating an international revival in waltz music, Andre Rieu started his career quite early by studying violin at age five. Brought up in a large musical family, he developed a fascination with the orchestra. Andre Rieu studied violin under the tutelage of Jo Juda and Herman Krebbers at the ‘Conservatoire royal’ in Liège and in the Conservatorium Maastricht from 1968 to 1973. He won the Premier Prix, while studying with André Gertler at the music academy in Brussels from 1974 to 1977.
It was all classical orchestral music for Andre Rieu until he performed the ‘Gold and Silver’ waltz by Franz Lehár at the university. Impressed by the audience reaction, he decided to pursue the waltz form. Maastricht Salon Orchestra was formed as a he result and he performed as a violinist with the Limburg Symphony Orchestra.
Johann Strauss Orchestra was created in 1987 with twelve members. With that, Andre Rieu’s melodramatic stage performances, rock-star-style demeanor, and long, wavy hair have helped reinvigorate the waltz-music category. After its creation, the orchestra first toured Europe and there was renewed interest in waltz music mostly in the Netherlands. Rieu became known as ‘The King Of Waltz’ after the recording of the ‘Second Waltz’ from Shostakovich's Jazz Suites.
The Orchestra along with v has performed throughout Europe, in North America, and Japan, winning a number of awards including two World Music Awards. They have gone 8-times platinum in the Netherlands.
Andre Rieu’s lively and colorful orchestral presentations have been able to attract audiences that may not initially be drawn to classical music. Some of his orchestra's performances have been broadcast in the United Kingdom and the United States on the PBS television network such as the 2003 airing of Andre Rieu Live in Dublin, filmed in Dublin, Ireland, and 2005's Andre Rieu Live in Tuscany filmed in the Piazza Della Republica in the village of Cortona in Tuscany, Italy. He has also recorded musical albums for Polygram. He has also done many charity concerts including the Jose Carrera's Cancer benefit concert and supports a charity in Africa.
Andre Rieu music records a wide range of classical music, popular and folk music and music from famous motion picture sound tracks and theater musicals from his own recording studio. He plays a 1667 Stradivarius violin. He used to work together with his brother, Jean Philippe, for several years. Now that Philippe has his own production company, Andre Rieus son, Pierre does that now.
The Waltz King of Europe is currently married to his wife, Marjorie and has two sons: Marc and Pierre. He can also speak several different languages including Dutch, German, French, Italian, Spanish and English.
