When it comes down to the British Rock bands, one band stands out from rest and that is Coldplay. Coldplay was formed in 1997 in London, England and over the years passed by, band has been able to develop sound fan base not only in UK but all across the globe. The band members were studying at University College London and this is where they met each other for the first time. Chris Martin, who is vocalist, pianist and guitarist of the band, and Jonny Buckland, who is the lead guitarist were the first ones to meet each other. During their first year at college both of them kept on planning to form up a band named Pectoralz. By then duo became friends with the third member of the band, Guy Berryman who is the bassist of the band, and who also became the part of the band. The band was renamed to Starfish in 1997. During that time the band also started to perform gigs at number of small clubs.
The bands next two entrants were Phil Harvey and Will Champion. Phil Harvey took charge as the manager of the band while Will Champion took on the duties of a drummer. As the band's line up was finally complete the band was ultimately renamed to Coldplay, a name which was suggested by a local student.
As Coldplay, the band took its first step towards music career as they released Safety E.P, and made 500 copies of it. Most of these copies were sent of to several record companies while some of them were given away to their friends and family. The very first record label, with which the band signed, was Fierce Panda, with which they released Brothers and Sisters EP. Later in the mid of 1999, the band signed with Parlophone for their next five albums, and with that record label they released their third EP album titled The Blue Room.
Coldplay's debut album, Parachutes, was released in July 2000, which fetched them a #1 spot on UK album charts. Prior to the release of their debut album Coldplay earned its part of public exposure as they released their hit single "Yellow" which debuted at #4 spot on the UK music charts. Another single from their debut album called "Trouble" also received major airplay on several radio channels. After acquiring enough success in Europe, Coldplay turned to North America and released Parachutes their in November of 2000. Slowly but steadily the sales of the album in America kept on rising and ultimately the album reached 2x Platinum status in America as well. Band also got their hands on their first Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album for Parachutes.
After the success of their debut album, the band started working on their second studio album titled "A Rush of Blood to the Head" and released it in August 2002. The album incorporated several hit singles such as "In My Place" and "The Scientist". The release of the album was followed by their A Rush of Blood to the Head tour in support of their second album. Apart from commercial success, their second album also fetched them two more Grammy Awards, one in 2003 for Best Alternative Music Album and second one in 2004 for Record of the Year for their single "Clocks".
The band's third studio album was titled X&Y and it was released in June 2005. The first single of the album was "Speed of Sound" which received sound airplay on several radio channels. The album it self debuted at #1 spot on the different music charts around 22 countries. In support of their album, Coldplay went on their Twisted Logic Tour, which started from June 2005 and lasted till July 2006.
Coldplay's next studio album is Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. The first single from that album was Violet Hill which was released on radio on 29 April 2008. The second single from their album was titled track Viva La Vida, which after being release took the #1 spot on Hot 100 and also peaked at #1 on UK charts. The album itself was released on June 15, 2008 and it debuted at #1 spot on UK albums chart. And apart from that it also became one of the fastest selling albums in UK.
Currently Coldplay in on their Viva La Vida tour which started on June 16, 2008 at Brixton Academy in London.
