Iron Maiden
With such powerful hits as 'Two minutes to Midnight' and 'The Trooper', Iron Maiden are often considered the leaders of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. Iron Maiden is an English heavy metal band formed in 1975. The group was named after a medieval torture device, characterized for producing suitably heavy and hard on the senses music.
Marking successfully their music history, the band is now looked upon as one of the most influential bands in the heavy metal genre. Without significant mainstream or radio support, Iron Maiden sold over 80million albums worldwide. The group's influences include Thin Lizzy, UFO, Deep Purple, and Wishbone Ash. The often-imitated Iron Maiden entertained people for over 35 years, pumping out wild rock.
The band has always been an underground attraction; although never succeeded to ever obtain any real media attention in the U.S. Iron maiden still garnered worldwide attention and became well known throughout the world. Iron Maiden was one of the prime groups to be classified as 'British metal' and has remained consistently popular throughout their career. Along with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and a host of other bands, the group set the rock scene for the '80s.
Iron maiden produced heavy metal music in the late 70s when this genre was widely regarded as stagnant. Since its inception, Iron Maiden was from the start the brainchild of Steve Harris, formerly a member of pub rockers Smiler. It was at this time that a new movement of British music groups began to emerge. This new breed of young musicians, began to break cover in 1979 and 1980 and was known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
The bassist Steve Harris would soon join up with rhythm guitarist Tony Parsons, drummer Doug Sampson, and vocalist Paul Di'Anno. Prior to obtaining a final record deal, the band performed in local areas throughout the '70s. Iron Maiden got their initial success by receiving a fair amount of London airplay. However, the band has always been an unfortunate in continuing their performances with the same crew. It had to undergo personnel transitions.
Replacing Dennis Stratton by Parsons, the group produced its record debut in 1980 with the self-titled Iron Maiden album. Although the release was recorded in a hurry, it was nonetheless a hit in the U.K. The album spawned a hit single 'Running Free'. Following the debut album, Killers, was released in 1981. This album displayed a relatively harder approach to their music than before. It was the time when Stratton was exposed as an alcoholic addiction. Due to his uncontrollable alcohol addiction, Adrian Smith replaced Stratton.
Consequently, Di'Anno was forced to part the company with Iron maiden. He would soon be replaced with vocalist Bruce Dickinson for the band's groundbreaking number, 'Beast'. Released in 1982, this album would come to be known as one of the greatest rock recordings of all the time. The Beast boasted such songs as the title track and 'Hallowed Be Thy Name', brining the band to the prominence. For their next album, Piece of Mind', the band changed very little of their style. It again gathered appreciation the band had expected. This continuous success paved a way for Iron Maiden to produce a hit after hit.
Throughout its existence, Iron Maiden has received many awards and honors. In 2002, the band won the Ivor Novello Awards for international achievement. Iron Maiden was also inducted into the Hollywood RockWalk in Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles County, California.
