Madonna
Every bit as charismatic, charming and lively as ever, Madonna is one of the biggest stars of all time. One minute she's flopping around in a white dress to "Like A Virgin" at the 1984 MTV music awards, then she's a solid supporting actress in A League Of Their Own, and next she's a protective mother who knows when to relinquish her wild side. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of 2008, Madonna has sold over 63 million albums with 12 No. 1 hits. She's recorded 11 studio albums with two additional live albums and three soundtracks.
In the 70s with only $35 in her pocket, Madonna joined a band in NY City and got local play at dance clubs, attracting the attention of a rep from Sire Records. Her first release was "Everybody" in April 1982. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Chart. Her self-titled debut album followed and reached No. 8 on the U.S. albums chart. Her next album matched her "look" of fishnet stockings and rough-around-the-edges religious jewelry -- Like A Virgin. It quickly became her first No.
1 on the U.S. albums chart, boasting hits like "Dress You Up" and "Material Girl." Then she entered the world of acting and appeared in her first flick, Vision Quest in 1985. The soundtrack boasted her second No. 1 hit "Crazy For You," which was nominated for a Grammy. It was around this time that Madonna married actor Sean Penn while filming her video for "Material Girl." Her next album True Blue was a huge success. Five wildly popular singles followed; "Papa Don't Preach," "Open Your Heart," "La Isla Bonita," "True Blue," and "Live To Tell." In 1989, Sean Penn and Madonna officially divorced. She's released so many life-affirming, radio-dazzling songs along the way, from "Holiday" to "Hung Up", via "Virgin" and "Vogue".. The diva's latest album, Hard Candy (her last for Warner Records), dropped April 29 to rabid fan anticipation and generally positive reviews. In many ways Candy is a continuation of Madonna's last album, Confessions on a Dance Floor, albeit a starker, more minimalist collection of rump-shaking tunes. It is her most discussed, dissected album since "Erotica"
"Hard Candy" is her last and11th studio album for her longtime label, Warner Brothers; in October she announced a new deal with the touring giant Live Nation that will encompass recordings, tours, merchandising and various other projects, and is valued at $120 million. Madonna enlisted some of the top names in the music business to create her latest project, including Pharell Williams, Timbaland, the Neptunes, and Justin Timberlake. On April 30 the queen of pop staged a one-night-only concert to promote the album, at New York City's famed Roseland Ballroom. It was broadcast live on the Internet by MSN and on cell phones worldwide by Verizon and Vodaphone.
Produced globally by Live Nation, Sticky & Sweet is Madonna's upcoming tour in support of her current chart-topping Warner Bros. release "Hard Candy". It is set to take off from Aug. 23 with dates through the end of the year. The trek will span three continents and include between 50-60 shows total. Starting with Cardiff, Wales, it will play stadiums in the U.K. and Europe until the end of September, arenas and a "handful" of stadiums in 16 markets in North America in October and November, and then stadiums in Mexico and South America late November-December.
The U.S. leg of the 'Sticky & Sweet Tour' begins October 3rd, 2008 at the Izod Center in E. Rutherford, New Jersey, with stops at NY's Madison Square Garden on October 6th and 7th, followed by performances in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and more before stopping at Miami's Dolphin Stadium on November 26th.
Madonna has always been an unabashed attention seeker, and she knows just how to keep her fan base under her spell. The visuals, and the choreography at her concerts are always most electrifying. To date no one has done such a theatrical, brilliant show. The woman is going to be 50 this summer and easily keeps up with backup dancers half her age without even breaking a sweat. She is a self-inventor and a recreator on a never-ending scale.
