Steve Miller Band

Born on October 5, 1943 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Steve Miller - a key artist of the band - is considered as one of music's most interesting and prolific artists. The Steve Miller Band is an influential American blues rock band. Till date, the group has released 17 albums and has been making records of nearly every genre since 1968. Their all albums sound nothing alike but always reflect the work of Steve Miller.

Steve Miller was a son of a music-loving physician and had a childhood that any musician would envy. World renowned instrumentalists like Les Paul, Red Norvo, Tal Farlow and Charlie Mingus often drooped by and visited Milller's father while performing in the Milwaukee area. By the time he was 12, Miller and his family relocated to Dallas where he formed his first Blues band called the Marksmen Combo. Later, Boz Scaggs joined the band and the duo continued to be bandmates while attending College at the University of Wisconsin.

After completing studies, Miller moved to Chicago where he spent nearly three years playing blues guitar. He succeeded jamming with some of the Windy City's outstanding blues talent. Miller briefly formed a band with keyboardist Barry Goldberg. A well-traveled blues guitarist who arrived in San Francisco in 1966, Miller signed a lucrative agreement with Capitol Records. As a result, some of the most substantial and texturally interesting music of the era was produced.

During 20years at Capitol, Steve Miller and a varying cast of musicians always billed as the Steve Miller Band. The group would produce such music as alternately psychedelic, straight-out jazzy, bluesy, country tinged and gorgeously poppy. Even more notable than that variety was Miller's ability to perform skillfully in those modes with the distinct core of his sound or his own personality.

Steve Miller put together the Steve Miller Blues Band, whose primitive work can be heard backing Chuck Berry on his album titled 'Live At The Fillmore' (1967). Additionally, the band provided three songs to the soundtrack of the 1967 film Revolution. Later, the group flew to England where they recorded their memorable debut album titled Children of the Future in 1968. At that time, the band consisted of Miller, Scaggs, drummer Tim Davis, bassist Lonnie Turner, and organist Jim Peterman.

That version of the band lasted till the recording of its remarkable follow-up 'Sailor'. By the time Scaggs quit to embark on his solo career. True '60s classics, both albums in retrospect functioned as samplers of the direction, Miller would be following while unfolding his career. As band members began departing circa 1969's Brave New World, Miller used supplementary musicians like Ben Sidran and pianist Nicky Hopkins.

Miller was the only remaining original member of the original Steve Miller Band by 1971's Rock Love. The album was his first since 'Children Of The Future' not to enter the Top 40. But 1073's The Joker was something clicked in Miller's career and its title track soared to become Miller's first ever No.1 single.

In 1978, Miller relocated to Oregon and built a 24-track recording studio. He emerged with the music he had recorded there in 1981. Miller's career took a tumble in 1983 and sensing his longtime relationship with Capitol was near its end, he released two usually genre-specific albums. In 1993, Miller returned with an album first ever of his career on a label other than Capitol. Album was titled 'Wide River'.
