Stevie Wonder

A much beloved American Idol and an indisputable genius musician, Stevie Wonder has earned worldwide fame not only for R&B but also for popular music. Wonder was born on May 13, 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan. He is an American singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. Started playing the harmonica at an early age, he was signed to a long-term contract with Motown Records in 1060.

Wonder released his debut album titled Little Stevie Wonder: The 12 Year Old Genius in 1963. His single 'Fingertips' turned out to be his first million seller. He was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. His heightened awareness of sound helped him produce vibrant, colorful music teeming with life and ambition.

Ray Charles has always been a source of inspiration for Wonder. Much like his inspiration, he had a voracious appetite for many different genres of music. He explicitly refused to confine himself to any one's sound or style. Stevie's best records feature a richly eclectic brew of soul, funk, rock & roll, sophisticated Broadway, jazz, reggae, and African elements. He takes these elements and forges them into his own personal form of expression.

Stevie Wonder's creative potential and incredible talent was discovered by Ronnie White of the Miracles during an audition in Motown Records in 1961. Wonder worked under the supervision of writer/producer Clarence Paul, who accentuated his prodigal talent as a multi-instrumentalist. The release of the 'Fingertips (Part 2)' established Stevie's commercial success. Soon afterwards, Motown marketed him on a series of albums as 'the 12-year-old genius'.

During 1964, Wonder's career was placed on hold while his voice was breaking. He came out once again with a sound that was much closer to the Motown mainstream in 1965. The music scored a worldwide hit with the dance-oriented 'Uptight Everything's Alright'. While attending the Michigan School for the Blind during 1960s, Wonder had many chartbuster records in the classic Motown rhythm-and-blues style.

Throughout the 1970s Stevie Wonder got complete artistic control over the use of synthesizers and electronic keyboards. Along with Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes, he experimented with R&B for his album, crafting his LPs as cohesive and consistent statements. This made Wonder perhaps R&B's greatest individual auteur.

Featuring a fusion of progressive rock and soul, biting social commentary, and sentimental ballads, Wonder issued innovative and commercially successful albums in a row. On his 21st birthday, Stevie renegotiated his contract and became proficient in his work. Either addressing serious racial, social or political issues; nearly everything Wonder produced had bore the stamp of his joyous optimism. He has also sung about heartbreak and romantic uncertainty, hence an underlying sense of positivism and hope always seemed to emerge.

During the course of 1980s and 1990s, Stevie was increasingly engaged in children's and civil-rights causes. He also led the campaign to make Martin Luther King's birthday a national holiday. Released in 2005 was his highly anticipated album titled 'A Time To Love'. The album arrived as a wake-up call to the restorative powers of love. Throughout in his music career, Stevie Wonder has won 26 Grammy Awards, one lifetime achievement and one Academy Award for Best Song.
