American country singer and songwriter, Toby Keith Covel was born on July 8, 1961 in Clinton, Oklahoma.
He later moved to Moore, Oklahoma with his family. Keith became interested in the musicians who came to play at his grandmother's supper club and got his first guitar at the age of 8.
After graduating from Moore High School where he played on the football team, he went to work as a derrick hand in the booming oil fields of Oklahoma. Toby Keith formed the Easy Money band at the age of 20 and started playing at local bars while still working in the oil industry. Sometimes, he would have to leave in the middle of a gig if he was paged to work in the oil field.
Toby Keith went to Nashville, Tennessee in 1993 and hung out on Music Row and Houndogs but couldn't get a recording contract and was all set to give up on music as a career. A flight attendant fan of Keith's gave his demo tape to Harold Shedd, a Mercury Records executive. Fortunately, Shedd liked what he heard and signed him up with Mercury.
'Should've Been a Cowboy' became Keith's debut single and went to number 1 on the Billboard country singles chart, and his self-titled debut album was certified platinum. Other hit singles included 'A Little Less Talk And A Lot More Action' and 'Wish I Didn't Know Now'.
Toby Keith moved on to Polydor Records and his next albums Boomtown (1994) and Blue Moon (1996) went gold and platinum respectively.
Beach Boys' now out-of-print 1996 album Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 featured Keith performing a cover of their 1963 hit 'Be True to Your School' with the Beach Boys themselves providing the harmonies and backing vocals.
Because of creative differences with Mercury, Toby Keith moved over to DreamWorks Nashville for his next album 'How Do You Like Me Now' (1999). The album went double platinum and the title song 'How Do You Like Me Now' was a number 1 single for 5 weeks.
Toby Keith's successful television advertisements for Telecom USA and his latest hit album made him a superstar and household name. He also worked in Ford commercials and the company still sponsors his tours.
Inspired by his father's death in a car accident and the September 11, 2001 attacks, Toby Keith wrote the song 'Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue (The Angry American)' about his father's patriotism and faith in the USA.
Toby Keith made an appearance at the very first Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (then NWA-TNA) weekly pay-per-view on June 19, 2002, where he was interrupted by Jeff Jarrett.
Keith opened Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill in Bricktown, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and launched his own record label called Show Dog Nashville in 2005. He then released the album 'White Trash With Money' followed by the soundtrack to Broken Bridges. The movie was written by Cherie Bennett and Jeff Gottesfeld, and directed by Steven Goldmann and released on September 8, 2006 also starring Kelly Preston, Burt Reynolds, and Tess Harper. It is a contemporary story set in small-town Tennessee where Keith plays Bo Price, a country musician whose career has seen better times.
Big Dog Daddy, the album with his single High Maintenance Woman, is scheduled to be released on June 12, 2007.
