Emmy-nominated American stand-up comedian and actress Kathleen "Kathy" Griffin was born on November 4, 1960 in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Illinois.
Youngest of three boys and two girls, Kathy was raised in Oak Park and in the nearby Forest Park. After Griffin graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School in 1978, her parents retired to California. They had been married for 65 years when Kathy's father, John Patrick Griffin died in 2007.
In the early 1980s, Kathy Griffin began performing with the Los Angeles improv comedy troupe, The Groundlings teaming up with Janeane Garofalo on the comedy act 'Hot Cup of Talk,' that later became the title of her 1998 solo HBO special. Before that she was cast as the acerbic colleague of Brooke Shields' title character on the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan in 1996.
Kathy Griffin broke into films as Connie in the horror movie The Unborn (1991), starring Brooke Adams. Kathy Griffin snagged a role in comedian Julie Brown's Medusa: Dare to Be Truthful (1992) and in fellow comic Bob Goldthwait's movie Shakes the Clown (1992). She had two appearances as the character Susan Klein on her TV sitcom debut, NBC's The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Griffin's dramatic-series debut became ABC's divorce-attorney series Civil Wars.
Self-consciously tacky projects draw her in and she won the 2003 edition of the reality show competition Celebrity Mole Hawaii where she had to walk over hot lava with her bare feet among other things.
Griffin's voiceover work has been featured on the Dilbert animated series and one of the Spider-Man animated series. Her solo reality show 'Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List' started in 2005 on the cable network Bravo featuring many of her family members. Its first season was nominated for a 2006 Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Reality Program, non-competition.
