The band came into existence in 1986 by the name of the Sex Maggots. However the name was changed to “Goo Goo Dolls” shortly after a promoter became hesitant of booking them. The name of the band came from toy that was called Goo Goo Doll. The original line up of the band, when it was formed, comprised of John Rzeznik, Robby Takac and George Tutuska. Initially, Takac took charge as the lead vocalist of the band, as Rzeznik was too shy to sing. Soon after, the band struck its first record deal with Mercenary Records with which they released their debut album titled Goo Goo Dolls in 1987. The following year Goo Goo Dolls were asked to sign a record deal with Celluloid Records, which was a bigger record label as compared to the Mercenary Records. In 1989, the band came up with their second album called Jed. After the release, the band moved to Los Angeles, and started recording their third album which was released the following year. The title of band’s third album was Hold Me Up , and it featured Rzeznik as the lead vocalist of the band for the first time on five of the tracks.

The band garnered considerable amount of media attention for the first time in 1993 with the release of their follow up album titled Superstar Car Wash . However, major break for the band came when they recorded and released their fifth studio album titled “ A Boy Named Goo ”. The album was released on Metal Blade Records and it managed to go up to the reputation of being one of the most successful albums of that decade. Following the completion of the album, George Tutuska was fired from the band and Mike Malinin replaced him as the band’s new drummer. Later on, the band signed up with Warner Bros. Records that was the distributing label of Metal Blade. So in 1998 the band released their sixth album called Dizzy Up The Girl . The album featured the band’s biggest hit titled “ Name ”, which made them a commercial and critical phenomenon.

However the real stardom came to the band when Rzeznik was approached to write a song for the movie “ City of Angels ”. He accepted the offer and wrote a song titled “ Iris ”. The song instantaneously became a big hit, and led the band to super stardom. Not only the song was nominated for three Grammy Awards, it was also broke the record by being on Billboard Hot 100 Airplay list for eighteen weeks. The song helped Goo Goo Dolls achieve global fame. After Dizzy Up The Girl , the band has released three more albums the latest of which is Something for the Rest of Us , which came out in 2010. Following the release of the album, the band went on tour in order to support their album. As of now the band as announced to extend the tour and it will also be featuring Michelle Branch and Parachute as guest musicians.
