Tanglewood 75th Anniversary Celebration
Tanglewood draws its name from the works of American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, who on taking advice from his publisher at the time, William Ticknor, decided to rent a cottage in the region in 1850, from owner William Aspinwall Tappan. During his stay at the cottage, Hawthorne wrote one of his most famous works called Tanglewood Tales, which was a re-written version of several Greek myths. As an ode to this book, the cottage’s owner renamed it Tanglewood, while the name went on to further inspired neighboring estate owned by the same family. Being prized for one reason or another, the place and its associated events has now come to inspire Tanglewood 75th Anniversary Celebration.
Tanglewood 75th Anniversary Celebration looks back seventy five years to 1936 when its concerts had only just begun with Boston Symphony Orchestra first played its works in the Berkshire festival. The earliest series of three concerts in a row was arranged under a mere tent with a crowd of fifteen thousand. Only a few months after, owner Mary Aspinwall Tappan, who was a descendant of the venue’s original owners, handed the family’s Tanglewood estate to the orchestra. Then in 1937, the orchestra came back for a Beethoven show, which was presented on the two hundred and ten acres of Tanglewood property. The following year saw the construction of a shed in the shape of a fan, with about five thousand and one hundred seats, thus providing the orchestra with a permanent venue to play at. In 1941, Serge Koussevity, the conductor began a summer school there with three hundred musicians enrolled, which today is known as Tanglewood Music Center.
The BSO, which too will be performing at the upcoming Tanglewood 75th Anniversary Celebration, has been performing in the Music Shed since every summer, with the exception of 1942-45 years, during which time the trustees had called off the summer school and concerts owing to the Word War. In 1959, this Shed was given a renovation that included BNN Technologies’ acoustic designs. By 1986, the BSO had purchased its nearby Highwood estate, furthering the area with almost forty percent. On this new property expansion, the current Seiji Ozawa Hall was constructed in 1994.
