“P.T. Barnum’s Great Travelling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Hippodrome” was in operation since 1875 after controversial showman Barnum was talked into starting it by William Coup and Dan Castello. The 1944 Hartford Circus Fire killed more than 100 in a huge disaster, and things never were the same as the new generation took up movies and television as their recreational pastimes, and circus interest dwindled. Irwin Feld bought it off John Ringling North in 1967, and immediately set about restoring its pride by making a Clown College and starting new tours to maximize attendance.
