Los Angeles Lakers
Los Angeles Lakers hail from movie capitol of the world, Los Angeles. This franchise started from Detroit, Michigan; moved to the Land of 10,000 lakes; Minneapolis, and that's where they got their name from. Before locating to LA, the Lakers had won five major league championships, and this record helped them become one of the most successful franchises within the National Basketball Association.
The Los Angeles Lakers have proven themselves to be one of the league's premier teams, participating in the NBA championship 28 times and winning 14. Under their head coach Phil Jackson, the Los Angeles Lakers became the 2000-2002 NBA champions and the 2004 Western Conference Champions. In 2005-06 regular season the Lakers made a record of 45-37. In 2007, the Lakers defeated the Sacramento Kings and the Dallas Mavericks. Few sports franchise can match the Lakers for their record of unprecedented success. The roster of NBA greats that have donned a Los Angeles Lakers uniform reads like an NBA Hall of Fame list.
Given that the team belongs to Los Angeles, Lakers has a huge celebrity fan base which includes stars like Halle Berry, David Beckham, Will Smith, Pete Sampras, and Sylvester Stallone. Jack Nicholson has been by far the most prominent member of this group; Jack has held all season tickets since 1970.
Lakers franchise moved to LA in 1960, but their quest for the Championships was thwarted by the Celtics six times in eight years. Boston Celtics have been the greatest rivals of the Lakers. These two are the most storied professional basketball franchises in NBA history. As it stands, the Celtics lead in total championships with 16 to the Lakers' 14. In the past the Lakers - Celtic games have featured great battles between Bill Russell (Boston) and Wilt Chamberlain (Los Angeles), but that relationship was rather one-sided. It continued with renewed fervor in the 1980s when both teams were strong, and was personified as Larry Bird (Boston) vs. Magic Johnson (Los Angeles). The rivalry has died down since Bird's retirement and the rise of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls dynasty in the 1990s. The Sacramento Kings are another team that Lakers' fans love to hate. The rivalry between the LA Lakers and the Sacramento Kings is recent, having started in 2000, as both teams became prominent.
Under Pat Riley as coach, 1980s was dubbed as the Lakers decade as they appeared in the finals for eight times from 1980-90 and clinched the title five times.
The next decade did not start off well for the Lakers as they did not put forth squads worthy to attain the championships. They also signed former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson in 1999 and lead by O'Niel, Bryant, Coach Jackson and a talented supporting cast went on to win three consecutive NBA Championships from 2000-02.
Lakers failed to defend their title in 2003-04 and the whole 2004-05 season was also full of lackluster performance from the team. However, 2007-08 season has been a comeback season for the Lakers. After the first draft choice in the 2008 pick, Lakers went on to become No. 1 seed in the Western Conference defeating the Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, and then, within five games, the veteran Spurs. But eventually Lakers lost the series.
After two seasons without winning a playoff series Lakers coach Phil Jackson made a few changes. He is setting up a more up-tempo offense, asking players to push the ball upcourt for quick chances before settling into the triangle offense. On defense, Jackson is pulling back for a more conservative approach after struggling with more full-court pressure last season. Bryant is also being asked to set up teammates before the triangle is really set up. Jackson wants the Lakers to look for more early offense on each possession. Lakers fans have their fingers crossed and wish the team all the best this year!
Los Angeles Lakers retained the top spot on the list of most popular team's throwback merchandise for the fifth consecutive season last year. Lakers are the only team in the NBA not to wear white normally at home. However, since the 2002-03 season the team has worn white LA Lakers throwback jerseys on Sunday and holiday home games. Bryant changed his jersey number this year from 8 to 24. His jersey is now No. 1 in sales and Wade's has slipped to second place, according to the NBA.
