One of two major league franchises, The New York Mets are a Major League Baseball team based in Flushing, in the New York City Borough of Queens having the honor of winning two World Series Championships in 1969 and later in 1986.

Attorney William Shea announced the formation of a third major baseball league when The Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants abandoned New York for California in 1957. Now, the New York City had a National League team with Joan Whitney Payson and her husband Charles Shipman Payson as the principal owners, along with George Herbert Walker. It was ultimately and very aptly named "Metropolitan Baseball Club of New York," or "Mets" because it was closely related to the club's already-existing corporate name "New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc."

Famous for their ineptitude and considered as lovable losers in their early period from 1962 to 1968, they lost their first nine games en route to a 40-120 record and their winning percentage was .250, the third worst by any major league team since the beginning of the 20th Century.

Mew York Mets acquired top pitching prospect Tom Seaver in a lottery in the late 60's, and he became the league's Rookie of the Year in 1967 but the Mets remained in last place. The 1969 season had mediocre start and by mid-August the Mets held third place being ten games behind. Later, they piled up victory after victory, winning 38 of their last 49 games and finishing in first place with a 100-62 record for the season. Tom Seaver's superb performance gave them a team ERA of 2.99, and a league leading 28 shutouts. "Amazin' Mets" or "Miracle Mets" was their new nickname and they went on to win a three-game sweep of the strong Atlanta Braves led by legend Henry "Hank" Aaron.

The Miracle magic wore off as 1970s began and New York Mets received lackluster support from the hitters with mediocre finishes. Manager Gil Hodges suffered a sudden heart attack at the end of spring training and died prior to the 1972 season throwing the team into confusion and shock, as he was the key player who had led the team to the World Series victory in 1969.

The Doubleday publishing company bought the Mets franchise for $21.1 million in January, 1980 and Nelson Doubleday Jr. was appointed as the new chairman of the board, minority shareholder Fred Wilpon was club president and Frank Cashen was hired as general manager.

All-star catcher Gary Carter joined in 1985 and won 98 games but they lost the division title to the St. Louis Cardinals in the final days of the season in a memorable series. They ended the Atlanta Braves' streak of 14 straight division titles and became the first team to win the National League East title since the 1994 division realignment, besides Atlanta. 2006 was the first time ever that both New York teams, the Mets and Yankees each won their respective divisions in the same year having the best records in their respective leagues, 97 wins and 65 losses.
