World Series Champions, t he St. Louis Cardinals are a Major League Baseball team based in St. Louis, Missouri. They are in the Central Division and have the record of the most World Series championship wins in the National League. Formed as part of the American Association in 1882, they were initially known as the "Brown Stockings" but it was quickly shortened to "Browns".

The American Association went bankrupt in 1892 and the Browns joined the National League. Their uniform color was switched from brown to red and they became "Cardinals" as a "Reds" team already existed at Cincinnati. In 1899, the St. Louis Cardinals owner transferred much of the talent from the Cleveland Spiders to the St. Louis franchise. The Spiders wiped out and the color brown was adopted by the new American League franchise, the St. Louis Browns. St Louis Cardinals shined in the mid-1920s with Rogers Hornsby. They won their first pennant in 1926 by knocking off the powerful New York Yankees in seven games in the World Series.

A minor league farm system was also worked out by General Manager Branch Rickey to produce great players and to keep the Cardinals in contention for the next two decades. Between 1926 and 1946, the Cardinals, Cubs and Giants would become fierce rivals, that trio winning 17 of the NL pennants to be had during those 21 seasons. St. Louis Cardinals lost the 1930 World Series to the Philadelphia Athletics 4 games to 2 but bounced right back the following year as their aggressive game of "inside" ball broke the A's back in 7 games.

A single season record for brothers was made by Dean and his younger brother, Paul who combined to win 49 games in 1934. Early 1940s was their era of dominance as "St. Louis Swifties" won 106 games in 1942 and posted the second best records in team history at 105-49 in 1943 and 1944. The 1944 World Series gave them the opportunity to meet and beat their cross-town rivals, the St. Louis Browns, in the "Streetcar Series". Leading this team was Outfielder Stan "The Man" Musial also known as "Ol' Number 6". He gave them 23 years of his life and his statue was constructed outside Busch Stadium in 1968. Led by popular manager Red Schoendienst, they continued to be perennial contenders through the early 70s.

The new St. Louis Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog chimed in after an unsuccessful stint in the 1970s. He later led the team in winning three National League pennants, and a 1982 World Series title. St. Louis Cardinals again won the National League in 1987 but lost to the Minnesota Twins 4 games to 3 in the World Series.

Southwest Bank's Drew Baur, Fred Hanser and William DeWitt, Jr. bought the team and Busch Stadium in 1995. Baseball executive Walt Jocketty became their new general manager one year before that and now the franchise had a winning combination. St Louis Cardinals finished fourth in the NL Central Division with a record of 73-89 in 1997. Mark McGwire hit 24 homeruns in only 51 games.

St. Louis Cardinals posted their best records in 2004 as they had 105 wins and earned home field advantage for the NLDS and NLCS. They won the Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-1.
