New York Yankees is an American baseball team from The Bronx in New York. The team is a member of the MLB, and plays in the East Division of American League. It is ranked among the initial eight charter entries, being founded in1901 in Baltimore when they were called Baltimore Orioles. The team relocated to New York after two years of its inception, and where they were renamed New York Highlander, only to be renamed yet again after a decade, in 1903, when they became the Yankees.  Between the years 1923 and 2008, the team played its home games at the Yankee Stadium, moving to another ballpark of the same name in 2009.  The Yankees are among the highest scoring MLB teams, having won the World Series championships twenty-seven times, the American League pennants forty times, thus setting new league records twice. Owing to the team’s high winning percentage, New York Yankees tickets are a huge deal for hard core baseball fans.

New York Yankees has played in several home grounds before which include Oriole Park, Hilltop Park, Polo Grounds, Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium, that order. Since 2009, the team plays its home games at the Yankee Stadium (II), situated in The Bronx in the city of New York. The ballpark is constructed on the previous site of Macombs dam Park, and opened in April 2009, on a day when the Yankees held a workout day for the team, in the presence of its many fans from amongst the people of Bronx. The Yankees played their first game on their new home ground on the third of April, which was an exhibition game with the Chicago Cubs in which the Yankees won with a score of 7-4.

New York Yankees played its first season game two weeks later, against the Cleveland Indians from whom it lost with a wide margin score of 10-2. The stadium has a seating capacity of more than fifty thousand, and covers twenty-four acres worth of land. Its construction cost is estimated to be one and a half billion dollars, which not only marks the most pricey baseball ground ever constructed but ranks it as the third most costly stadium in the world. The stadium’s design assimilates characteristics of the former Yankees stadium, as a tribute to the team’s history.

The origins of New York Yankees go back to late 1900, when the president of Western League, Ban Johnson brought changes in the structure of the league, with the additions of teams to three Eastern cities that were to comprise the American League.  At the time, New York Giants from National League had enough influence to keep out the AL, and blocked any possibilities of putting a team in NYC. A team was instead put in the city of Baltimore, which was not included when the NL in 1900, initially took in twelve to eight teams.

In 1911, when the team was known as the Highlanders, the Polo Grounds which was the home ground of the Giants burned down, so that Highlanders offered them to play their home games in Hilltop Park while their previous grounds were being fixed. During this time the relation between the two teams improved, so that in 1913 the Highlanders were soon invited to relocate to the newly reconstructed Polo Grounds. Since now the team was playing on the Harlem River, which far from high-altitude, made the name of highlanders inapplicable. During the time the media already adopted the nickname of Yankees, which was initially coined by New York Press, and was officially named the New York Yankees in 1913.

New York Yankees have attained much popularity alongside a loyal fan base. Under previous owner George Steinbrenner, the franchise has provided huge payrolls in order to enlist fresh talent, so as to make sure it can win as many championships as possible.
