Based on the songs of ABBA, Mamma Mia! is a musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson. 'Mamma Mia' was the group's 1975 chart-topper. It is estimated that 30 million people must have seen Mamma Mia musical since it opened and has been performed in 9 languages: English, German, Japanese, Dutch, Korean, Spanish, Swedish, Flemish, and Russian. The show Mamma Mia premiered in London on April 6, 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre, transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004. Siobhan McCarthy (Donna), Louise Plowright (Tanya), and, Jenny Galloway (Rosie) made up the original London cast.

Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, Ontario saw its North American premiere on May 23, 2000 and the Broadway premiere was on October 18, 2001, at the Winter Garden Theatre. Louise Pitre (Donna), Judy Kaye (Rosie), and Karen Mason (Tanya) made up the original Broadway cast of Mamma Mia group. With 1,500 performances till May 15, 2005, Mamma Mia! surpassed the original Broadway runs of The Sound of Music, The King and I, and Damn Yankees becoming the 24th longest running Broadway musical of all time as September 9, 2006.

With its 1,000th performance in Las Vegas as of June 2005, the show Mamma Mia became the longest running, and most successful Broadway play ever in Las Vegas. The story of abba Mamma Mia revolves around Donna (originally played by Siobhan McCarthy) and her daughter, Sophie and takes place on a fictional Greek island, where Donna owns and manages a taverna, catering to locals and tourists alike. Sophie is about to marry her fiance, Sky, and wants her father to give her away at her wedding but she isn't sure of his identity as Donna won't talk about her past. By accident, Sophie finds her mother's old diary which has entries of Donna's intimate dates with three men.

As she has no idea about the right man, she invites them all to the wedding without Donna's knowledge leading to her confusion when all three show up. Harry 'Head Banger' Bright, Bill Austin, and Sam Carmichael make up the trio. Donna's old friends; Tanya, a rich three-time divorce, and Rosie, an unmarried woman who likes to have fun also show up. Together they made up 'Donna and the Dynamos' twenty years ago. Initially believing that Bill is her father, Sophie asks him to give her away. Later, the other two also believe that they are the ones who'll do the deed. To straighten the mix, Sophie decides that her mother should give her away. This leads to Sam's confrontation with Donna about the paternity issue. As the scene progresses, it becomes more evident that Sam and Donna are still desperately in love, angrily and against their wills.

Sophie's paternity is undetermined and sine she and Sky are having second thoughts about their impending marriage they drop the plans and Donna and Sam swallow their pride and are married instead. 'Super Trouper', 'Dancing Queen', 'Thank You for the Music', 'The Winner Takes It All', and 'SOS' are some of Mamma Mia!'s hits.

A film version of the musical Mamma Mia directed by Phyllida Lloyd with Tom Hanks Rita Wilson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson as executive producers, is planned for summer of 2008.
