The Color Purple
The National Book Award winning epistolary novel, The Color Purple, is written by Alice Walker an American author and was published in 1983 for the first time. Apart from winning National Book Award, the novel also won Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1983 as well.
Later in 1985, the novel was adapted to a Drama Film which was directed by none other than Steven Spielberg. The movie starred Whoopi Goldberg is the lead role of Celie, who is a young African American girl facing problems such as poverty, racism and discrimination in the era of early 1990's. The other cast members included Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery, Akosua Busia and Willard Pugh. The movie was also nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actress for Whoopi Goldberg and best Supporting Actress for Avery and Oprah. However movie never won any of the awards. The movie wasn't exactly a copy of the novel it contained several differences from novel as well.
More recently Alice Walker's novel The Color Purple was also adopted for a Broadway Musical that opened at the Broadway Theatre on December 1, 2005. Before that the Musical made its World Premiere on September 9, 2004 at Alliance Theatre. The music and lyrics of the Color Purple were given by Allee Willis, Brenda Russell and Stephen Bray. The musical was produced by Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, and Scott Sanders, while it was directed by Gary Griffin. The cast included LaChanze, who played the lead role of Celie. The rest of the cast members included Brandon Victor Dixon, Felicia P. Fields, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Kingsley Leggs, Krisha Marcano, and Elisabeth Withers-Mendes. More recently the role of Celie was played by Fantasia Barrino.
Last year on April 17, 2007 The Color Purple's tour started in Chicago Illinois at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in which the lead role was played by Jeanette Bayardelle. Chicago Illinois was selected as the starting point since it was the residential place of Oprah Winfrey, who was also one of the producers of the Musical. Due to its popularity, the musical lasted for four more weeks than it was scheduled for, hence ending date was moved forward to September 30, 2007. After Chicago next stop on the tour was San Francisco, California. As of today Musical has won several Tony Awards, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Recently Musicals soundtrack album was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Album in 2007.
The musical starts with Celie, a 14 year old girl, is playing a clapping game with her sister Nettie during a Sunday Morning in rural Georgia in 1909. At that time, Celie is pregnant for the second time. This where the first song of the musical sets in titled, Huckleberry Pie. Later Celie arrives at the church along with her Pa and Nettie and goes into labor before the service ends. Later Celie's Pa takes her second baby away from her like the first one, and tells Celie that he is going to get rid of it and asks her not to tell anyone except god, this is where Celie asks God for a sign to let her to know what is happening to her.
