In 1911' The Phantom of the Opera was brought to limelight for the very first time as a novel' written by Gaston Leroux. Soon after' Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to transform it into a play. It was originally based on horror' but Webber wrote it as a romance play that was set in a Paris. Michael Crawford acted as a Phantom' Sarah Brightman as Christine and Steve Barton as Raoul in the play. Phantom is an anecdote of blemished man who lives in the innards of the Paris Opera House. He gets infatuated with Christine' a younger singer' and wants to have her mine by hook or by crook.
The Phantom of the Opera was relocated to Broadway in 1988 at the Majestic Theater with Crawford and Brightman. The show was an echoing triumph and granted Andrew Lloyd Webber the peculiarity of being the first composer to have three musical running concurrently in London and Newyork. After its Broadway premier the show opened in LA with Michael Crawford again as the Phantom and Dale Kristine as Christine.
Having record-breaking run in LA' the show moved to the Curran theatre in San fransisco starring Davis Gaines as the Phantom and Lisa Vroman as Christine. From there' two national tours opened in the US' the Raoul Company and the Music Box Company' the Toronto production opened at the Pantages Theatre with Colm Wilkinson taking the lead in 1989. Productions then opened in Australia' Japan' Germany' Holland' Switzerland' and Sweden. It performed in a total of 119 cities and 24 countries worldwide. The fabrication won 50 major theater awards.
The Phantom in London had its 10th anniversary in 1996. It still has selling out performances as well as shows. For the Broadway anniversary' fans were very upset that there were no tickets being sold to the public' so' all the Phantom phans got together like no other phans and fought till they got there tickets. They even held their own anniversary celebrations since they were not allowed to the official celebration.
The Toronto Phantom is making its way to its 10th anniversary while the San Fransisco production is in its fifth year. Phantom is now the longest-running musical in Canada's history and the play's musical itself is the most successful musical ever produced. Phantom has been flouting records in about every theatre it has visited and expectantly will keep breaking records for more decades to come.
It still has selling out performances as well as shows. The Broadway production pulled out 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical of 1988 and in January 1998 the Broadway production marked its 10th Anniversary.
In 2004' the famous Broadway musical was transformed into a motion picture starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. It had 3.2 billion box office sales to date. On January 9th' 2006' The Phantom of the Opera was demonstrated as the longest running Broadway musical ever. Today we are celebrating its 20th Anniversary.
