The Phantom of the Opera is based on the classic novel Le Fantome de l’Opera by Gaston Leroux. It tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House and terrifies everyone who come near it. He falls in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine and uses all his efforts to make her into a star.
Carlotta has the lead role at the opera and a young and inexperienced Christine holds a smaller one taking lessons from the mad, lonely, disfigured Phantom. He demands that Christine is made the lead and when it is not done he steals Carlotta's voice and then spirits Christine away to his lair beneath the theatre and beyond a mysterious lake. He reveals his love for her; but Christine has fallen in love with the Opera's wealthy patron Raoul. They plan to capture the phantom while planning out a production of a play written by him named Don Juan Triumphant. This constant battle between Raoul and the Phantom for Christine's love brings the story to its inevitable climax.

As, the whole idea of the show is based on a novel by a minor French novelist, it has been largely unread, since 1911.And no doubt Lloyd Webber's music has a lush, romantic sweep but many other operas boast the same but don't compel such astonishing attention. Because of this, a lot of people don’t understand the reason of the overwhelming impact of the show and it needs a bit of explanation.
The Phantom of the Opera musical amalgamates virtually all its elements into a glorious theatrical show and by doing so triumphs above all. All the factors coalesce into a musical of manifold delights with Harold Prince's virtuoso direction, the performances led by Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, the spectacle created by a brilliant design team, the beautifully sung music and Gillian Lynne's period choreography.
Currently on in New York, Madrid, Stuttgart, Japan and Denmark, it has been seen by over 100 million people.
