The Phantom of the Opera is based on the classic novel Le Fantome de l’Opera by Gaston Leroux. It tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House and terrifies everyone who come near it. They plan to capture the phantom while planning out a production of a play written by him named Don Juan Triumphant. This constant battle between Raoul and the Phantom for Christine's love brings the story to its inevitable climax.
On 9 October 1986, the Phantom of the Opera broadway opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles. The show was directed by Harold Prince and produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Company.
