Young Frankenstein is a musical with a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and music and lyrics by Brooks. It is based on the 1974 comedy film of the same name written by Brooks and Gene Wilder and directed by Brooks, who has described it as his best film. It is a parody of the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Brooks and Meehan began work on the project in April 2006. An October 2006 reading of the first draft of the script directed by Susan Stroman featured
Brian D'Arcy James as Dr. Frankenstein
Kristin Chenoweth as Elizabeth
Sutton Foster as Inga
Roger Bart as Igor
Marc Kudisch as Inspector Kemp
Shuler Hensley as the Monster.

Cloris Leachman, reprising her film role, and at the time it was widely reported she would be offered the role of Blucher for the stage show. However, gossip maven Liz Smith reported in her January 12, 2007 New York Post column that Leachman was sent a letter informing her she would not be considered for the Broadway production because the producers wanted to keep the film and stage properties separate.

The pre-Broadway try-out started at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington on August 7, 2007. The show is scheduled to begin previews on Broadway on October 11 and to open on November 8 at the Hilton Theatre. Frederick Young Frankenstein, an esteemed New York brain surgeon inherits a castle in Transylvania from his grandfather, Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. He leaves New York and his tightly-wound fiancee, Elizabeth, and travels to Europe to settle the estate, deriding his late grandfather's experiments with dead tissue as delusional. In Transylvania, he meets his grandfather's hunchback henchman, Igor; Inga, a sexy lab assistant; and the forbidding housekeeper of the castle, Frau Blucher. Young Frankenstein finds his grandfather's laboratory and writings and becomes tempted to carry on the late deranged genius's experiments in the reanimation of the dead, as well as by his growing feelings for his laboratory assistant, Inga. The experiments lead to the successful creation of a Monster, but complications arise because Igor has mistaken his instructions for selecting a brain for the creature. Making matters worse for Frederick, Elizabeth has arrived in Transylvania.

Frederick must decide whether to sell the estate and return home to his rich but cold fiancee, Elizabeth, who is a "self-worshipping WASP tart" or stay. The Monster shows some skill at song and dance but is soon out of control, and Inspector Kemp is called in. After a number of adventures, including an encounter between the monster and a blind hermit, Frederick is eventually saved by the monster and accepts that his fate as a Frankenstein is to carry on the family business. The Monster and Elizabeth find common ground and fall in love, the hermit and Frau Blucher agree to go out on a blind date, and Frederick becomes engaged to Inga.
