Mamma Mia! is written by Catherine Johnson and is inspired by songs written by the legendary music band ABBA. The title of the play itself is taken from one of their hit songs but the play is completely fictional. Judy Craymer, one of the most successful musical producers of all time met Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, members of ABBA who were composing a song titled The Winner Takes it All. It was this song that convinced Craymer that ABBA’s tracks could be translated into a musical. Catherine started to work on the book on Judy’s advice and Phyllida Lloyd became the director of the play.
 
Mamma Mia! is a story about a girl Sophie who is about to get married and she wants her father to walk her down the aisle on her wedding but there is a catch, she doesn’t know who her father really is. Then one day she comes across her mother’s personal diary which has details about her flings with three different men. Those inscribes convinces Sophie that one of the three men is her biological father so she invites them to the wedding by writing each a letter and signing them off by her mother’s name. Her mother Donna has no idea about what her daughter is up to so the arrival of the three men triggers a story of confusion, lost love and numerous twists and turns by the end of which their lives will never be the same again.
 
Mamma Mia! made its debut at the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre on 6^th April, 1999 where it ran for staggering five years non-stop until it was moved to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004. That run from 2004 is still being continued to this day to become one of the longest running shows in history. The London production has not only won an Olivier Award but has also received rave reviews from fans and critics alike.
 
After unprecedented success in London, Mamma Mia! made its way to the U.S. making its debut at the Orpheum Theatre, San Francisco then moving on to LA, Illinois and then finally to the majestic Winter Garden Theatre, Broadway. The Broadway run started on 18^th October, 2001 and is still going as strong as ever with fans still queuing up to buy Mamma Mia! tickets. This epic run has created records and is now one of the top ten longest running shows in Broadway history.  The musical debuted at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in 2003 and closed in 2009 thus becoming the longest running show ever in Las Vegas.
