38 Special was formed in 1975 in Jacksonville Florida by neighborhood friends Donnie Van Zant and Don Barnes. The band’s initial music had a strong southern rock tone but by the early 80’s, 38 Special shifted away from their southern rock roots to a more hard rock and arena rock style, this change was fruitful as the band got more success in this genre and helped the band in ushering some hit singles and albums. In 2007 the band was an opening act for Lynyrd Skynyrd and the famous Rowdy Frynds Tour of Hank William Jr. In 2008, they teamed up with famous country singer Trace Adkins to film a CMT Crossroad special in which they performed on their old hits.
The year of 2009 saw 38 Special attending the "Can’t Stop Rockin Tour" in which they opened for Styx and REO Speedwagon. The band’s current line-up consists of Larry Junstrorm (bassist), Bobby Capps (keyboards), Gary Moffatt (drums), Barnes (vocals) and Donnie Van Zant (lead guitars). Till date 38 Special have released twelve studio albums and three of them can be termed as the most successful as they were certified Platinum by RIAA, the names of these albums were Wild-Eyed Southern Boys (1981), Special Forces (1982) and Tour De Force (1984) these three albums were at #18, #10 and #22 respectively on US Billboard Top 200.
The band also released six compilation and specialty albums like Wild Eyed and Live! , Flashback: The Best of 38 Special , Live at Surgis and 20 th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of 38 Special . The Flashback: The best of 38 Special was released in 1987 and it went to #35 on US Billboard Top 200 and was certified Platinum. Some famous singles of the band are "Teacher, Teacher" (#4 US Mainstream Rock Charts), "Second Chance" (#1 US Adult Contemporary Tracks) and "The Sound of Your Voice" (#2 US Mainstream Rock Charts). The band had bootlegs at various venues in the past years such as Denver Colorado in 1980, Eldorado Road 1984, Westwood One: Live at the Summit in Houston Texas in 1987, Memphis in 1988 and again a live concert in Memphis in 2000.
