Out of them, Duane and Gregg were the real Allman brothers and had been a part of three bands: Escorts, Allman Joys and the Hour Glass. After commercial failure of the last band, everyone was released from the contract except Gregg, whose 'Liberty' had some commercial potential. Duane started jamming with the other band members and bringing in 'Jaimoe' made the nucleus of the band. Gregg was still fulfilling the contract with Liberty Records but was summoned back to Jacksonville by Duane to 'fill out the band and sing'. 'Eat a Peach' came out in 1972 and was softer ('Blue Sky', 'Little Martha') and wistful in tone ('Melissa', 'Ain't Wastin' Time No More'), capped by the 34-minute 'Mountain Jam' reverie taken from the Fillmore East concerts. Writer Greil Marcus thinks that parts of Eat a Peach are ageless and seamless like an after-the-rain celebration; like front-porch music stolen from the utopia of shared southern memory.
