Career:
1960s: Beginnings:
Manilow enrolled himself at the New York College of Music and Juilliard, while working in the mailroom at CBS to pay his expenses. While at CBS in 1964, 21-year-old Manilow met Bro Herrod, a director, who asked him to arrange some public domain songs for a musical adaptation of the melodrama, The Drunkard. Instead, he wrote an entire original score. The musical became a success and ran Off-Broadway for eight years in New York.
1970s: Success:
His association with Bette Midler began at the Continental Baths in New York City accompanying her and other artists from 1970 to 1971. She also chose him to assist in the production of her first two albums The Divine Miss M (1972) and Bette Midler (1973). Later, when Manilow had an album of his own released, she allowed him to sing three songs during her intermissions. Altogether, Manilow worked with Midler for four years, from 1971 to 1975.
1980s: Midlife
The 1980s gave Manilow the Adult Contemporary chart-topping hit songs The Old Songs, Somewhere down the Road and Read 'Em And Weep. Manilow continued having high radio airplay throughout the decade.
Also in 1980, a concert from Manilow's sold-out shows at the Wembley Arena was broadcast while he was on his World Tour. Manilow released the self-titled Barry (1980) which was his first album to not reach the top ten in the United States. The album contained I Made It through the Rain and Bermuda Triangle. We Still Have Time was featured in the 1980 drama Tribute.
1990s: Under Cover:
In the 1990s, Manilow's album career changed significantly. His recordings switched from him being primarily a singer-songwriter to him being a cover artist. A trend that started with the 1989 release Barry Manilow continued with his 1990 Christmas LP Because It's Christmas.
2000s: Comeback
In the beginning of the new century Manilow had two specials, Manilow Country and Manilow Live, taped over two consecutive days at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville, Tennessee. On April 11, 2000, The Nashville Network (TNN) aired the two-hour Manilow Country. The special was TNN's first high definition broadcast and became one of TNN's highest rated concert specials. In March 2006, PBS aired Barry Manilow: Music and Passion, a Hilton concert taped exclusively for the network's fundraising drive. Manilow was nominated for two Emmys, winning for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program.
In January 2007, Manilow returned to his hometown of New York City for three shows at Madison Square Garden. One highlight was the showing onscreen of Manilow performing in one of his first television appearances while the "live" Manilow played along onstage. In July 2007, it was revealed that Manilow will release a CD spotlighting the decade he became a super-star: the 1970's. The Greatest Songs of the Seventies is set to be released September 18, 2007.

Barry Manilow has also been the headliner at the Las Vegas Hilton from 2005 to 2009 followed with headlining at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. He grew up in Williamsburg in Brooklyn and studied at the Eastern District High School which he finished in 1961. He then joined Juilliard performing arts school while working part time to support himself at CBS. It was during this time that he adopted his mother’s surname for his own and began singing and playing music. While at CBS, he was asked by Bro Herrod to write songs for an adaptation of Melodrama. Barry Manilow went on and wrote a musical score for this which was then used in the shows run at the 13th Street Theatre in New York. It was after this that he began working as a producer and as an arranger as well as playing the piano to earn money.
Barry Manilow first began working as a jingle writer for commercials as well as performed some of the jingles he wrote. One such jingle was that of State Farm Insurance, Like a good neighbour, State Farm is there, which were immensely popular and catchy. He wrote jingles for many of the biggest brands including Band Aid, KFC, Pepsi, Dr Pepper and even McDonald’s. The first awards he bagged were for this work and these were Clio Awards awarded to him in 1976. Through Bell Records, Barry Manilow released his first album Barry Manilow in 1974. This album offered a wide variety of music with piano pop and even rock. His second album, Barry Manilow II, was released soon after with the hit single Mandy.
By the 80s, Barry Manilow had released a number of multi platinum albums with hit singles. These were Tryin' to Get the Feeling, This One's for You, One Voice and Even Now. Barry Manilow also ventured into the world of TV with the ABC special, The Barry Manilow Special premiering in 1977 to an audience of 37 million. This special earned four Emmy nominations and one Emmy Award. His song, Ready To Take A Chance Again, was nominated for an Oscar under the Best Original Song category and his hit album Copacabana was turned into a movie and three different musical plays. Two years later, ABC came back with yet another special which was nominated for two more Emmy Awards and bagged one more Emmy award.
Barry Manilow has also received other awards which include a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award and a special Tony Award in 1977, an American Music Award 1978, a Grammy Award and an American Music Award in 1979, an American Music Award in 1980, induction into Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2002, an Emmy award in 2006, RIAA Plaque in 2007 for passing the 75 Million sales mark, Clio Awards in 2009, an induction into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame and even the Kentucky Colonel Award. All in all, Barry Manilow has many awards which prove that he is the one singer you should definitely listen to live.
