Grammy Award winning singer, Bette Midler, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on 1 December, 1945. A little earlier from Bette Midler's birth, her mother Ruth, who was a seamstress and housewife, and her father, Fred Midler, used to live in Paterson, New Jersey, but they moved to Honolulu Hawaii, where her father started working as a painter at Navy Base in Hawaii. Bette attained her high school education from Radford high School. And then for further studies, took admission in University of Hawaii with a major in Drama, however, she dropped out of the University after attending just three semesters.
Midler made her first appearance on the Big Screen, when she played a role of an extra in the 1966 release Hawaii. With the money that she received for that role of hers, she moved to New York City to pursue her acting career. She started doing that as she a got a part in off-off-Broadway plays by Tom Eyen's in 1965. The plays included Cinderella Revisited and Miss Nefertiti Regrets. The following year Midler moved from off-off-Broadway plays to Broadway play titled Fiddler on the Roof. Later in 1979, Midler played a role of the drug addict rock star in a Broadway play The Rose, and this was the play that got her an Oscar for Best Actress.
Midler made her second Big Screen appearance as she played a role in a comedy flick titled Jinxed that was released in 1982. The movie was a major flop, which is why Midler avoided doing any other movies till 1986, when she signed a multi-picture deal with Touchstone Pictures. From then on she appeared in number of movies including, Ruthless People, Outrageous Fortune and Big Business. Later in 1989, Midler voice acted in Disney's animated movie, Oliver & Company and after that she appeared in several other movies including Hocus Pocus, The First Wives Club and the Stepford Wives.
Midler started her career as a singer when she started singing for the first time in 1970, at the Continental Baths and later released her debut album in 1973, titled The Divine Miss M, which certified platinum status. As of today Bette has released a total of 12 studio albums, with the recent one being Bette Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook. The album was released on October, 25 2005 and included songs like "Fever", "I'm a Woman", and "Is that All There is?" As of today Better Midler has received a total of 4 Grammy Awards.
Through out her music career Bette Midler has been to 18 tours. She is currently on her 19th tour, which kicked off on February 20, 2008. The tour is named "The Showgirl Must Go On" performed at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. During that tour she is scheduled to perform a total of 100 shows. Show contains the back up singers, the Staggering Harlots and 20 other show girls along with a 13 piece band. The Showgirl must go on is scheduled to end on December 31st of this year.
