The artist from Savannah, Georgia was born Antwan André Patton but adopted the moniker Big Boi for the showbiz. Having a musical inclination from a young age he went on to pursue his interest while attending the visual and performing arts institute Tri-Cities High School. There he met André "3000" Benjamin, with whom he later formed the band Outkast. The duo signed with the LaFace Records and found immense success with several of their singles charting in top twenty. After releasing four platinum selling albums both the artists decided to release solo work.
Their solo attempt was released as a double album under the name ‘Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.’ Benjamin’s music was included in The Love Below while Speakerboxxx featured Boi’s solo tracks. Selling platinum the joint album proved to be a commercial success and also won a Grammy in the ‘Best Rap Album’ category.
Boi’s collaboration with the artist Sleepy Brown for the single ‘The Way You Move’ proved to be a major success. Not only did it top the Billboard Hot 100 charts but was also ranked at number twenty two on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade. A version of the song has also been used in the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005’s console version.
The artist stayed with Outkast and later ventured into solo projects. His first independent album ‘Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty’ made its Billboard 200 debut at number three. It also got him international exposure and charted in various countries. He followed it with another album ‘Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors.’ The album features Kelly Rowland on the song ‘Mama Told Me.’ The song is a cover of the Swedish pop group Little Dragon’s song. Other artists who have collaborated with Big Boi on the album include Kid Cudi, Ludacris, ASAP Rocky, Bosko and Phantogram.
His music involves various genres. These include dubstep, funk, electro, soul and rock. He is known for his tongue in cheek lyrics which featuring wordplay and tongue twisters often make references to pop culture. Quite often Boi’s songs are like social commentary and are themed around the problems faced by the world in general and African American’s in particular.
