Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in New York City in an affluent household, Lady Gaga
showed an interest in music and performance at a very early age. After graduating from high school, she became one of a handful of students who gained early admission into the musical training conservatory called Collaborative Arts Project 21, at NYU’s Tisch School of Arts. However, during her sophomore year, she decided to take a break from college in order to pursue a career in music.
The next few years saw Lady Gaga
experimenting with her look and music, while she struggled to secure a record deal. During this time, she became heavily influenced by the like of Madonna, Queen and David Bowie and started to incorporate elements from the music of all three artists into her own act. She also became fascinated by neo-burlesque and go-go dancing and eventually paired up with performance artist Lady Starlight, with whom she did avant-garde performance art. The duo performed as the Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue
and was invited to play at the 2007 Lollapalooza festival, where it was very well received by critics. After a friend of Lady Gaga sent a selection of recordings that she and him and made a few years earlier to a record executive, Gaga was signed to Sony/ATV.
In 2008, Lady Gaga released her first full-length album, titled The Fame
, to universal critical acclaim and commercial success. It charted at number one in many countries - including the U.K, Switzerland, Canada, Germany and Austria – while appearing in the top five in seventeen other countries. The album featured the hit songs "Poker Face" and "Just Dance", the latter of which is currently the best-selling single of all time and was nominated for Best Dance Recoding
at the 2009 Grammy Awards. The Fame
was also nominated for Album of the Year
and Best Dance/Electronica Album
, but only won one of the awards.
Since her promising debut, Lady Gaga
has gone on to become one of the most iconic, recognized and successful young recording artists, both in recent years and in the history of the medium itself. Her records have sold more than twenty million copies globally and she has been awarded countless accolades. She has won a total of five Grammy Awards, one American Music Award, seven Billboard Music Awards and almost three dozen MTV Awards, to name just a few. Furthermore, her concert tours attract millions of fans and are ranked among the highest-grossing ones in history. Gaga has also been named as one of the top Artists of the Year by Billboard magazine as well as one of the most influential people in the world by Time
magazine. Her music videos are also wildly popular, and have received heavy rotation on MTV whilst getting millions of hits online.
And now, Lady Gaga is going on her biggest and most grand tour yet: Born This Way Ball Tour

The shows will all be divided into five separate acts and will have an overarching narrative that will include themes like self-love, government control and discrimination.
