was a result of three musician friends namely Alejandro Marcovich (lead guitarist), Alfonso Andre (drums) and Saul Hernandez (lead singer and rhythm guitars) joining hands to perform together. Initially they were with different bands but Marcovich’s brother was making a film and for the three friends made band primarily started as a side project called Insolitas . As the music interests were similar so they started doing small shows at different venues in Mexico City such as El Jabali, Rockotitlan and High Tower. This resulted in the formation of Caifanes in the year 1987 with the addition of two more members namely Diego Herrera on Keyboards and saxophone and Sabo Romo on bass guitar. The name of the band is extracted from a word "Cai Fan" which in English means "cool dude".
developed a unique music style that was not very common at that time in Mexico. The music can be described as a mixture of dark version of pop rock, punk and progressive rock with solemn and deep lyrics combined with the impactful voice of Hernandez. Caifanes produced four demo singles that were aired on local radio Channels and the demo was showcased on a famous radio program that promoted new talent. Still the Mexican labels were not interested in signing Caifanes but as the rock music wave was hitting Mexico with full force many Argentinean and Mexican bands were getting popular. Caifanes got their first ever major break when they opened for the famous rocker from Argentina called Miguel Mateos. The result of this was that Caifanes were signed with Ariola Records for two albums with the help of Mateos producer Oscar Lopez.
The debut album was called Matenme Porque Me Muero but before the release of this album Ariola Records released a three single EP to test the market. It sold well and proved the talent of the band. The first album was a moderate success and was able to make Caifanes popular not only in their home country but also abroad. In the year 1989, Caifanes
made history by playing two shows at Mexico Auditorio Nacional, this venue can seat up to 10,000 fans and Caifanes became the first ever Mexican rock band whose both shows were sold out. In 1990 Caifanes released yet another superb album El Diabilto (volume 2) this album contained some fine guitar work by Alejandro Marcovich and developed a characteristic sound that became the highlight of Caifanes music. By this time the band had signed with BMG Records and released yet another fine album El Silenco in the year 1992. The album featured King Crimson guitar player Adrian Belew who played a pivotal role in giving the songs a more direct guitar driven sound. This album is termed as one of the most influential albums in Spanish rock music. In promotion of this album the band played 1992 and 93 in front of a full house audience at Hollywood Palladium and Palacio de los Deportes respectively.
The group disbanded due to differences among band members in the year 1995 after the release of their fourth and last album till date El Nervio Del Volcan . The band members started their own side projects and after a hiatus of fifteen years they have finally reunited and will soon be performing at the upcoming Coachella and Vive Latino festivals.
