American pop icon, Cher, was born on 20 May, 1946, in El Centro, California with the name of Cherilyn Sarkisian. Cher was a daughter to her mother Georgia Holt who was originally of British and German descent and was an occasional model, and to her father John Sarkisian who was originally an Armenian Refugee who was working in America as a truck driver. While Cher was still young her parents got divorced and she started living with her mother, who later married a banker named Gilbert LaPiere. Cher also had a half sister named Georganne LaPiere who is also an actress. Later her mother faced financial problems due to which Cher was sent to Foster care, but later her mother started paying for her acting lessons to help Cher pursue her career.

Cher released her first single titled "Ringo, I Love You" in 1964, which didn't come out to be a success. Later that year she released another single "Dream Baby", which wasn't a major success as well. She came in music industry with the help of Sonny, who worked for Phil Spector, a record producer at Gold Star Studios. Sonny was a fast friend of Cher; later the couple fell in love and got married.

Later Cher and Sonny formed up a duo, and released their debut album titled "Look at Us" in 1965. Duo's blockbuster hit "I Got You Babe" was also included in this album, which reached #1 on Billboard Hot 100. After releasing several other mid-level singles, Sonny and Cher soon became quite famous and also started touring around the globe to promote their act. Apart from that both of them also started making their appearances on some of the hit television shows of that era.

As a solo artist Cher released her debut album in 1965, titled "All I Really Want to do", which received certified Gold Status. The following year saw the release of Cher's second debut album titled, "The Sonny Side of Cher", which took #26 spot on U.S Music Chart. Her next album as a solo act came in 1966, titled "Cher", which wasn't as successful as her previous albums. Later in 1967, the duo appeared in movie called, Good Times, which didn't come out to be much of a success. Later Cher Released another album of hers titled, Backstage, which was a disaster.

As the duo was unable to cope with the changes brought by time in the era and most of the music listeners turned their attention towards psychedelic rock, their album sales reduced to a great number. Cher and Sonny made another appearance in the movie called Chastity, which came out to be a flop as well.

Later in 1970, Duo started hosting a TV series called "The Sonny and Cher Nitty Gritty Hour", which received critical success. Apart from that as a duo and as a solo act Cher kept on establishing her fame and gave out many hit singles. Later on, Sonny and Cher got divorced, which was finalized on June 27, 1975.

In June 2002, in order to tribute her 40 years music career, Cher went to Living Proof: The Farewell Tour, which was supposedly her last tour of the lifetime. Due to the immense popularity of the tour, the dates kept on extending and the tour ended in April 2005. Even after being for 40 years in the music business, Cher still doesn't show any signs of lessening her contribution to the music world. Cher has also been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest female artist to reach #1 spot and the only female artist to give a #1 hit in every decade of her career.

Currently Cher is performing at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, "Cher at the Colosseum", which is referred to as, Cher's, return to the stage. The tour started on May 6, 2008 and is scheduled to end on October 5, 2008.
