The band known as Coldplay
, initially known as Pectoralz, was put together by two dynamic musicians, vocalist Chris Martin and guitarist Jonny Buckland. The two kindred souls met during their orientation week in September 2006 when they joined the prestigious University College London (UCL). Later on, they were joined by Guy Berryman as a bassist, and they changed their name to Starfish. The universally known ensemble of Coldplay
was finally completed in 1997 when Will Champion came on board as drummer, multi-instrumentalist, and backing vocalist. The band experimented with its music, churned out a few EPs, had some difficult times working together, and finally devised certain rules for giving their best while maintaining democracy in the band; the inspiration for the rules came from legendary bands like R.E.M. and U2.
After completing their education in 1999, the band was ready for embarking on the journey to make their music accessible to the public. After pocketing a deal with Parlophone for five albums in 1999, Coldplay
started working on its debut album called "Parachutes."
However, the actual workup on the album was delayed due to a string of tours and live performances. The first inklings of commercial success came with the single "Shiver
", but the spotlight actually settled on the band when "Yellow
was released; it promptly reached the number four position on the UK Singles Chart. The two songs were significantly responsible for the band’s first album debut on the number one position on the UK Albums Chart. To no one’s surprise, the band won the "Best British Album"
and "Best British Group Award"
in February 2001 following it by a prestigious Grammy award in 2002.
was followed by a brief contemplation period; the second album, "A Rush of Blood to the Head,"
was released in August 2002 again spawning several hit songs like "Clocks"
and "The Scientist".
The album release was followed by some aggressive international touring covering five continents. Again, Coldplay
won several eminent accolades for their outstanding music. The next album X&Y
in 2005 was easily the best-selling album; its lead single "Speed Of Sound"
was an ultimate hit with its heartwarming lyrics and stay-in-your-mind tune. The fourth album "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends
" was mostly recorded in parts of Latin America and contained a slightly different sound than its predecessor albums; the Hispanic influence with bluesy undertones made its way into the music. Fortunately, the slight change in music was significantly appreciated by the band’s fans, and the album was the best selling album of 2008. On 24th
October 2011, the band released its fifth album "Mylo Xyloto
" to very positive reviews; it was easily the best selling rock album in UK. Imbued with powerful emotions like love, escape, and addiction, it contained passionate, thought-provoking songs like "Paradise
