Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is about two con men living in the French Riviera. Small-time crook named Freddy Benson, cons lonely wealthy women with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. He justifies that they are equal partners in deluding themselves (Give Them What They Want). A divorcee named Muriel is one of the women who donates to his cause, and finds herself wondering the next morning if there isn't more she can to help (What Was a Woman to Do). Lawrence Jameson of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is the second suave, sophisticated, swindler who makes his living by talking rich ladies out of their money, but on a much grander scale. They first meet on a train and Lawrence eventually convinces Freddy that the small French town wasn't worth his while and sends him on his way. A chance encounter with Muriel clearly shows Freddy that Lawrence is a fraud, and he confronts him at his palatial estate. Now he wants it all and agrees on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target wins, and the other must leave town.

Lawrence's assistant-in-crime, the police chief Andre is unimpressed with Freddy (Chimp in a Suit). This is when Lawrence attempts to show Freddy how it's done by winning over the rich Jolene. Freddy comes to his rescue when the plan backfires as she becomes convinced they will marry and move back to her home (Oklahoma?). Freddy acting as Lawrence's younger brother repulses Jolene enough to make her leave (All About Ruprecht).

In an attempt to win over Christine, Lawrence poses as Dr. Sh?ffhausen and starts his bizarre treatment of Freddy (R?ffhousin' mit Sh?ffhausen) while Andre is busy keeping Muriel at bay. She decides to work the situation out for her benefit and convinces Andre that the distraction would work better from a more romantic angle (Like Zis/Like Zat). Dr. Sch?ffhausen/Lawrence and Christine decide to do the same thing in order to enrage Buzz/Freddy so that he will find the will to walk again (The More We Dance). Lawrence finds out that even though Christine wasn?t rich, she was willing to sacrifice any money she had to cure her love Buzz/Freddy. This hilarious battle of cons brings out the best and worst in each man, along with a fun, unexpected twist that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels play.
