Emmylou Harris is a twelve time Grammy Award winning artist, whose music has topped the charts many times and sold millions of copies. She is famous as a bandleader and a solo artist. She is also one of the most sought after duet partners and backing vocalists, having worked with the likes of Gram Parsons, Linda Ronstadt, John Denver, Dolly Parton, The Band, Roy Orbison, Mark Knopfler, Willie Nelson, Guy Clark, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Rodney Crowell, and Steve Earle.
Emmylou Harris was born to a military officer who had spent ten moths in Korea as a prisoner of war. She grew up in Woodbridge, Virginia and in North Carolina, going on to study at the Gar–Field Senior High School, graduating as a valedictorian. With an exemplary academic record, she became the recipient of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s drama scholarship, where she began learning music, particularly that of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Pete Seeger. She left college to pursue a career in music, moving to New York City where she began performing folk music and worked part time as a waitress to support herself.
In 1969, she record her first album, titled Gliding Bird, and then went on to perform with Tom Guidera and Gerry Mule as a trio. In 1971, she caught the attention of Chris Hillman of The Flying Burrito Brothers, who recommended her to Gram Parsons. She worked as the female vocalist on his first solo album and then went on tour with him as part of his band, The Fallen Angels. She then worked on a second album with Gram Parsons, with two more albums of recordings released later on. Her vocals are cited as having influenced Gram Parsons a lot, with his country music style influencing her as well.
In 1975, she released her first major label album, titled Pieces of the Sky, featuring the likes of James Burton, Ron Tutt, Glen Hardin and Bill Payne. One of its songs, Only Win Your Love, ranked fourth on the charts. She then founded the Hot Band, to record and perform with her, which includes musicians such as James Burton and Glen Hardin, who had played with the likes of Elvis Presley. In 1975, another album was released, titled Elite Hotel, which ranked fist on the charts and won her the Grammy Award for the Best Country Vocal Performance, Female.
She then went on to perform on Bob Dylan’s album as well as with The Band. In 1977, she released the album Luxury Liner, spawning three chart topping singles and songs that would lead to covers by the likes of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson.
She went on to become a success in mainstream pop as well, charting high on the Billboard pop charts and released albums popular among pop and rock fans. One of her albums also went on to rank first on the Billboard Country Albums chart for five weeks and ranked in the top ten of the Billboard Pop Albums chart. The album, titled Trio, sold millions of copies and was a collaborative effort with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton. In 2011, she released the album Hard Bargain, which ranked third on the Billboard Country Albums charts and in the top twenty of the pop charts. Added to twelve Grammy Awards, she has also won three CMA Awards, ranked as one of the 100 Most Influential Women in Rock and Roll by VH1, won the Billboard Century Award, ranked fifth in the CMT 40 Greatest Women of Country Music and has been inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as the Country Music Hall of Fame.
