Formed back in 1953, the Four Tops is known to be one of the pioneers of the Motown Sound and the Doo-Wop music back in the 1960s. With charting hits all through the late 60s and 70s, Four Tops contributed a ton to the genre and helped in making it popular during that period. The group had its first charting single back in 1964 titled Baby I Need Your Loving which peaked at #11 spot on Billboard Hot 100. From there onwards, the group maintained its momentum of giving out hit singles such as Ask the Lonely, It’s the Same Old Song, You Keep Running Away, I’m in a Different World and You Gotta Have Love in Your Heart. For its remarkable work and contributions to the genre, the group has also been ranked at the #79 spot on the 100 Greatest Artists List of All Time by the Rolling Stone Magazine. The group has also received numerous awards and accolades including Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Grammy Hall of Fame and #77 rank in the Top 100 Artists of All Time list by Billboard Magazine. Although with a different lineup, the group still continues to tour and perform live, decades after its formation. Four Tops tickets are highly sought after the R&B and Motown music fans each time the group steps out to perform live.
The group’s original Lineup comprised of Renaldo ‘Obie’ Benson, Lawrence Payton, Levi Stubbs and Abdul ‘Duke’ Fakir. The group continued with this lineup for more than four decades until finally being forced to change the lineup in 1997 after the death of Lawrence Payton. The group originally started performing by the name of the Four Aims, and later when the group scored a record deal with Chess Records, its name was changed to the Four Tops in 1956. During its time with Chess Records, then Riverside Records and subsequently the Columbia Records, the Four Tops wasn’t able to score any hit single and kept on touring live more than frequently. Later in mid-60s, the group decided to join the growing Motown movement of that time.
During its early years, the group continued to be featured as a backing act to a number of singles from the famous acts of that time until the Four Tops finally had its own charting single Baby I Need Your Loving
back in 1964. The song charted at #11 spot and also received massive radio airplay in New York and Detroit. This marked the first step for the group towards the mainstream popularity. From there on, the fortunes of the group started to get better eventually with a couple more of hit singles including Ask the Lonely.
The group scored its very first #1 hit single back in 1965 called I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)
and that made way to a string of hit singles for the band for coming years. The following year, the group also released its single called Reach Out I’ll Be There
which is considered to be the group’s biggest hit single as well as a huge contribution to the genre itself. The group kept on producing hit after a hit and its fan following as well as the popularity kept on growing steadily over the period. The group’s most recent album came out back in 1995 titled Christmas Here With You.
The album was released on Motown Records, and since the release the group hasn’t released any new material and has concentrated more on its live concerts and touring. As of the moment, Four Tops is still on the road with its act, entertaining thousands with its live performances.
