Frankie Beverly Maze was formed by
Frankie Beverly. He was born on 6
th December, 1946 and started singing Gospel music in a local church in his home town of Philadelphia. Frankie then went on to become a member of
The Silhouettes and played at his first concert with them at a tender age of twelve. The Silhouettes were a rage in the 50’s who had hits like
Get a job. Then as a teenager he furthers his learning of music by forming his own groups
The Dells, The Del Vikings and
The Moonglows. He then went on to form the doo-wop band
The Butlers. It was the first band with which Frankie stared recording which led to him meeting Kenny Gamble who went on to become a legendary producer in the future. The band garnered notable success locally but that was as far as it went. The name of the band was then changed to
Raw Soul as they moved to
San Francisco where they met
Marvin Gaye. When Marvin heard what they had to offer he was so impressed by the group they he started giving them opening slots on his shows. He also made them changed the group’s name to
Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly now also known as
Frankie Beverly Maze. Marvin also played a big part in the group landing their first major contract in 1976 with
Capitol Records. The released their debut album titled
Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, the very next year which turned out to be a big hit. The track
While I’m Alone became the biggest hit from the album and made it to the Soul Top 10 charts. The album was certified
Gold thus giving
Frankie Beverly Maze the kinds of debut they had always been looking for. The next three albums
Golden Time of Day,
Inspiration and
Joy and Pain all were big hits that went Gold as well to make it four in a row. On top of that singles like
Back In Stride and
Can’t Get Over You went to the number one spots to cement their reputation as remarkable soul performers.
Frankie Beverly Maze then released the album
Can’t Stop the Love in 1985. Helped by their first ever R&B number one sensation
Back In Stride, the album went on to become another big hit. They had started to generate headlines beyond the borders of the US as well with fans queuing up to buy
Frankie Beverly Maze tickets to see them perform live. In 1985 the group played to eight straight sold-out nights at the
Hammersmith Odeon, London. After a very successful relationship with
Capitol Records, they moved to
Warner Brothers and released their album
Silky Soul in 1989. It was another classic that had all the hallmarks of what made the band so special.
Marvin Gaye was once again the headline act which made it another huge hit. They followed that up with a series of fantastic performance in conjunction with
Nelson Mandela’s first visit to the U.S.
In 1993,
Frankie Beverly Maze released
Back to Basics, an album that proved a lot of people wrong who thought that the group’s best days were a thing of the past now.
