Furthur is a rock band formed in 2009 and composed of two former members of one of the most popular and legendary bands in rock, Grateful Dead. These two members, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, formed this band alongside Dark Star Orchestra member John Kadlecik as the lead guitarist, Jeff Chimenti from RatDog as the keyboardist, Jay Lane , also of RatDog, as the percussionist with Joe Russo from the Benevento/Russo Duo rounding up the band as the drummer. The name of this band, Furthur, is based on the iconic touring bus used by the Merry Pranksters and Ken Kesey back in the sixties. Not only does this band perform music by Grateful Dead but it also perform a good number of its original songs.
Today, Furthur lineup also includes Sunshine Becker, a backup vocalist of SoVoSo fame, and Jeff Pehrson, former member of The Fall Risk and Box Set. This band has a rich history that goes back to the time when Grateful Dead was coming to an end in 1995. After the death of Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead disbanded officially but the rest of the members went on performing live and releasing music. These members performed as Phil Lesh & Friends, RatDog, The Other Ones, The Dead and the Rhythm Devils. Following the famous 2004 Wave That Flag tour, The Dead performed a couple of amazing shows under the theme Change Rocksin 2008 and 2009. The former Grateful Dead members then went on a spectacular spring tour in 2009. It was during this time that the band Furthur was formed.
Thus, Furthur is a band that can be regarded as the reincarnation of Grateful Dead as it is made up of most of the remaining members of Grateful Dead. But that is hardly it; this is a band that is, musically, at the same level as the Grateful Dead and has even gone on to create its own unique style of music. It is in fact the band to watch live on stage if you are fond of Grateful Dead music. Not only does this band play the same style as Grateful Dead, some of its performances also contain an original and unique style that is at pace with modern trends in the world of rock. This band also performs a number of covers, mostly of famous rock bands such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Band, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Ryan Adams, Van Morrison and The Clash.
In 2010, Furthur welcomed new members into the band and then performed special shows including a special performance in celebration of the seventieth birthday of member Phil Lesh. The same year, the group went on to perform at three amazing music festivals including All Good Music Festival and Gathering of the Vibes.
This band’s full lineup consists of six members with Bob Weir as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Phil Lesh as the lead vocalist and bassist, John Kadlecik as the lead guitarist and lead vocalist, Jeff Chimenti on keyboards and as a backing vocalist, Joe Russo as the drummer and Sunshine Becker as a backing vocalist. This band, composed of former Grateful Dead members, is therefore one of the best bands to watch live for superb rock music and the best of Grateful Dead through Furthur tickets.
