Gavin DeGraw was born on February 4, 1977 to parents of Russian and Irish descent.
He showed interest in music at an early age. By the time he was eight, he was playing piano and singing. Later, at the advice of his brother he started writing lyrics of his own songs.
He started his music career by playing at local clubs in Manhattan. He had a small fan following which were mostly from his hometown.
Gavin DeGraw released his first studio album in 2003 titled “Chariot”. His big break came when his album’s song “I Don’t Want to Be” was selected as the teen drama, ‘One Tree Hill’s’ theme song. This song received gold certification and was featured in the Top 10 on the US charts. In 2005, it was nominated for the category of song of the year by Billboard Music Awards and by Radio Music A wards. Over the years, it has been very popular among the contestants of American Idol, Canadian Idol, Australian Idol, Idol Norway and Idol Sweden. The album achieved platinum certification in the US. It also did great business in Europe, reaching the top position in Denmark and No.2 spot in Norway. Subsequently, his two other songs, “Chariot” and “Follow Through” became popular and the favorites of the radio jockeys. Both the songs were certified gold. A year after the first album’s release, helaunched “Chariot Stripped” which was an acoustic version of his debut album.
With such an amazing start, the proceeding years have seen a hike in the popularity of Gavin DeGraw. He made several television appearances on shows like ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’, ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ and ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’. He even appeared on ‘One Tree Hill’. He along with his brother opened a rock music bar in Manhattan called ‘The National Underground’. All these activities kept him away from releasing another album. He returned to the studios in 2006 and recorded his second album which was self-titled. It was released in 2008. The US Billboard Chart put the album on the No.7 spot. A song from this album, “We Belong Together” was included in the soundtrack of ‘Tristan and Isolde’, a popular film released in 2006. It received gold certification in the US. Other famous songs of the album include “In Love with a Girl”, “Cheated On Me”, “She Holds a Key” and “I Have You to Thank”. The last two songs were released worldwide and not just in the US.
Before releasing another album, he released his EP in 2008. It was called “iTunes: Live from Soho”. It reached 167 th position on the US charts. His third album, titled “Free”, was released in March 2009. What is so incredible about this album was that Gavin DeGraw just took almost two weeks to record it at studio of Camus Celli, his producer. His fourth album, “Sweeter” was released in September 2011. Its song “Not Over You” received gold certification in New Zealand. All these three albums made it to the top 20 in the USA.
Gavin DeGraw has been on numerous tours since the beginning of his music career. He has toured with singers like Barenaked Ladies, Sister Hazel, Howie Day, Butterfly Boucher, Michael Tolcher, The Allman Brothers Band, Saving Jane, Marc Broussard and Jason Mraz. His recent tours were with Maroon 5 and Train (the band). They were within the US. In some of the concerts, DeGraw performed as the opening act. In the fall of 2011, he will be embarking upon a two month long tour with David Cook. Current members who support DeGraw include Billy Norris on guitar, Tony Tino on bass, Ian O’Neill on drums and Jimmy Wallace on keyboards and acoustic guitar.
