Iron Maiden is a heavy metal group based in Leyton in east London, created in 1975 by primary songwriter and bassist Steve Harris. Since the band’s formation, their discography has amounted to an impressive total of fifteen studio album, ten live albums, seven compilations and four EPs, coming together to a total of thirty-eight albums. The English band is widely credited as pioneers of British heavy metal movement that began with the band and gathered much international attention by the start of the 80s, which is when the band attained most success. Initially the group experienced an unsteady line-up after which it released several albums attaining the gold and platinum ranks in the UK and U.S. These include The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, and a live album called Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, all of which were released between 1982 and 1988. On the return of guitarist Adrian Smith and vocalist Bruce Dickinson in 1999, the group ‘s popularity went up once again with their most recent, critically well-acclaimed studio album The Final Frontier, taking the number one spot in twenty-eight countries around the globe. Iron Maiden tickets are now once again enjoying raving popularity and demand as they did back in the eighties.

The band was formed in 1975 on Christmas Day, by Steve Harris when he left Smiler, his earlier group. The band’s name, Iron Maiden was inspired from a film adaptation of an Alexandre Dumas novel, The Man in the Iron Mask, which Harris had just seen around that time and understood to have a linguistic connection to a torture device, iron maiden. Through the band’s earlier years, it faced issues in its lineup, beginning with lead vocalist Paul Day, who was replaced due to his lack of strong stage persona. Dennis Wilcock was then hired as the new vocalist, who was a fan of Kiss, and applied make-up with fake blood for live shows. Dave Murray, a friend of Wilcock’s was invited to join the group as opposed to the wishes of Terry Rance and Dave Sullivan, the Maiden guitarists. Due to the ensuing constant conflict, Harris felt forced to temporarily dissolve the group in 1976, but formed back quickly with Murray as the only guitarist. Dave Murray and Harris are the two longest-standing musicians of the group, who have worked on all the releases so far.

Iron Maiden continued to make winning records but it was not until 1982 with the enlisting of Dickinson that the group finally made an album, The Number of the Beast that won them their first ever Number One spot on UK Album Charts, alongside attaining the rank of Top Ten hit in other countries.  At the time though, Dickinson’s name was not added to any music-making credits even though he made significant contributions to The Prisoner, Run to the Hills, and Children of the Damned. The Maidens then took their second world tour, travelling to Canada, United States, Australia, Japan, Germany and the UK, while also appearing at the famous Reading Rock festival. By doing so, the band embarked upon a new, largely successful phase as their album got on to sell more than fourteen million copies around the globe. According to Harris, the sound of Iron Maiden is mainly influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath, Lez Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Yes Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Wishbone Ash, UFO and Thin Lizzy.

Iron Maiden is counted among one of the most influential and successful bands in the history of heavy metal. The group has sold more than eighty-five million records all over the world without any significant television or radio assistance. The Maidens received the Ivor Novello Award in 2002 for major international achievements, and was inducted in the Hollywood Rockwalk at Sunset Boulevard, California during their 2005 tour of the United States. The band has performed more than two thousand live concerts as of 2011 August.  The band has its own well-known mascot known as Eddie, who has been with them on many of their albums, single covers and is also present on most of their live shows since the last thirty years.  Get yourself Iron Maiden tickets and experience the power of a live heavy metal performance by a band that is perhaps the only one of its legendary kind.
