Andrew McMahon's started off playing music initially as the lead vocalist and pianist for the Orange County piano rock band, Something Corporate. The song he recorded in December 2000 titled 'Locked Doors' proved to be a primary impulse behind his solo project Jack's Mannequin. McMahon found the song was too different from previous Something Corporate material. He realized that if he ever decided to release it, it would be on a solo album rather than a band's album.

The idea would seem outlandish until late summer of 2004 when both McMahon and his band members were exhausted from months of touring and decided to take a temporary break. During his time off, McMahon laid down piano and vocal tracks for different movies.

Following Something Corporate's other songwriter and lead guitarist Josh Partington, who created a side project of his own called Firescape, McMahon too started writing his own songs. In order to release his songs, McMahon took a more therapeutic approach in writing these songs. As a result of which a more personal and intimate testament of his songwriting showed up. The songs began to take shape and eventually he decided to give them a final shot.

He paid for the production out of his own pocket and eventually ended up signing a record deal with Maverick Records. The Band is currently signed to Sire Records.Etymology.

Jack's Mannequin released their first album titled 'Everything in Transit' in August 2005. The album received a positive response from both fans and critics. A summer tour was scheduled to support the record release, but was cancelled after McMahon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He had to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Later in August 2007, the band resumed its recordings and strted working on their second album.

In August 2007, McMahon posted the lyrics to the song 'Cellular Phone' on his blog, which the band would play live at several shows in 2007 and 2008. Also, in February 2008, videos of live performances of two songs Caves and Suicide Blonde off the new record were uploaded onto YouTube for public viewing.

Andrew McMahon appeared on the cover of the January 2008 issue of Alternative Press, which contained an interview with him. The new record, revealed to be titled 'The Glass Passenger' in an official blog post. McMahon told in an interview to the Montclair State University student newspaper that the new album isn't finished yet and would get two to three months to get the word out to the press and media.
