From the late 70s to the mid 80s, few rock acts rose to prominence and earned mainstream popularity as did Journey. Journey is an American rock band formed in 1973 in San Francisco and began as a meandering jazz-rock outfit featuring two former members of Santana, guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Gregg Rolie.
The musical adventure was launched 25years ago and achieved eight multi-platinum albums, successfully carrying a place in history as one of rock's most popular bands. With a new album on the way, Journey is once again exploring its soulful rock with a new attitude.
The band has evolved and grown through several changes of personnel since its inception. Their greatest commercial success came in the late 1970s with a series of power ballads and songs such as 'Don't Stop Believing', 'Any Way You Want It', 'Faithfully', 'Open Arms', 'Separate Ways', 'Stone in Love' and 'Wheel in the Sky'.
In 1978, Journey debuted with 'Infinity', which would go platinum on the strength of two hit singles that served as a blueprint for their two-pronged attack. 'Wheel In The Sky' was a thumping anthem that opened up Perry's soaring moods and Schon's driving riffs. The group cranked out hit after hit over the following several years while playing packed arenas around the world.
Perry took time off to record a blockbuster solo album titled 'Street Talk', in 1983. Unfortunately when he returned, the group was overcome by power struggles and infighting. Things began to disintegrate, and by the time Perry, Schon, and keyboardist Jonathan Cain recorded 'Raised On Radio' in 1986. The band disbanded until 1996, when they mounted a comeback with Trial By Fire.
In recent years, Journey continues to earn worldwide fame and has sustained itself successfully mostly as a highly lucrative classic-rock oldies road show. While Perry is no longer in the lineup, soundalike vocalist Steve Augeri, is fulfilling what seems to have been a lifelong ambition, keeps the band's hard-pop aesthetic alive and well.
While Escape was Journey's biggest seller, the albums leading up to it, better stand the test of time, particularly Infinity and Evolution. Their 1988 Greatest Hits package has sold more than 10 million copies. Journey was honored a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 21, 2005. They released a new album, Generations, that same year and embarked on their 30anniversary tour.
In 2008, the band has released its new album titled 'Revelation', which is thought to bookmark one of the most challenging chapters of Journey's legendary career. It is the first album with lead vocalist Arnel Pineda.
The band has been eligible for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 2000. At present, Gregg Rolie is the only member of Journey who has been inducted as a member of parent band Santana.
'If the audience opens its ears and hearts and minds, we'll make our own mark', says Augeri of the new-look Journey. 'We're making music that makes a statement and makes sense for this time, today and for tomorrow!'
