The entire band sounds more wholly realized on Meteora. It's undoubtedly a rare achievement featuring a full integration of six members that still retains the unique qualities of each individual. The end result is the thumbprint style regarded as Linkin Park. 'We don't really analyze the chemistry', says Bourdon. 'We're just lucky and grateful that we found each other and that we work so well together'.
To those outside Linkin Park, the pressure to follow up that success might have seemed impossible. But within the band, vocalists Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda, guitarist Brad Delson, turntablist Joseph Hahn, drummer Rob Bourdon, and bassist Phoenix weren't afraid of it in ways you might expect. Instead of dwelling on outside expectations, the members set to work, carefully crafting each moment of each song to their own exacting standards.
Linkn-Park is known for their adaptation of the nu metal and rap rock genre into a radio-friendly yet densely-layered style in Hybrid Theory and Meteora. The band moved away from this and explored a variety of other genres in their latest studio album titled Minutes to Midnight. The album topped the Billboard charts. The group is also recognized for their several collaborations, most notably with rapper, Jay-Z, in their mash-up album Collision Course.
'The collaborations are more seamless now', agrees Bennington. Stating further, 'Mike, for instance, knows more about me as a person, and I know more about him, so it's easier to write lyrics together. It's not possible to have secrecy in our relationship. You have to open up, because you want the other person to be on the same page. We're all that way with each other.'
The group follows a style of both Hybrid Theory and Meteora, entangling the nu metal and rap rock sound with influences and elements from hip-hop, alternative rock, and electronica. It includes utilizing programming and synthesizers. In 'Minutes to Midnight', Linkin Park experimented with their established sound while drawing influences from a wider and more varied range of genres and styles. 'Minutes to Midnight' was their first studio album, featuring guitar solos.
Linkin Park's use of two separate vocalists has become a distinct and permanent part of their music. Chester Bennington is known for using growling and screaming vocals while using more melodic singing. Bennington has placed 46th in Hit Paraders' list of 'Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 100 Vocalists'.
Mike Shinoda is the group's MC, and does all of the rapping. Mike has sung lead vocals on 'In Between', 'Hands Held High' and the B-side 'No Roads Left'. He has also done all of the backing vocals live, and in their latest album, Minutes to Midnight.
