Coming from a musical background with both parents as musicians, it was only natural that Harrell showed a keen interest in classical music at a very young age. Harrell was only eight when he started learning to play the cello and thus started his musical journey that would take him to new heights.
Harrell attended the master classes of Gregor Piatigorsky and Pablo Casals when he moved to Dallas, Texas and it was here that his teacher Lev Aronson also guided him. His school years were spent studying music at the Juilliard School of Music. Here he studied with the renowned Leonard Rose, whom he considers a great teacher and cellist. It was in 1961 that Harrell made his debut when he played with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. After he was orphaned at the age of only 17, Harrell a year later joined Cleveland Orchestra in 1964 through his father’s acquaintance embarking on his musical career. For the next seven years he stayed with Cleveland Orchestra and accomplished to be the principal cellist there till 1971.
