Harrell attended the master classes of Gregor Piatigorsky and Pablo Casals when he moved to Dallas, Texas and it was here that his teacher Lev Aronson also guided him. The artist describes Aronson as a great teacher who gave him the passion and love for the instrument and for music and life. His school years were spent studying music at the Juilliard School of Music. Here he studied with the renowned Leonard Rose, whom he considers a great teacher and cellist. Later, he studied with Orlando Cole at the Curtis Institute of Music. It was Orlando Cole who advised Harrell to join an orchestra in order to focus on a solo career.
It was in 1961 that Harrell made his debut when he played with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. After he was orphaned at the age of only 17, Harrell a year later joined Cleveland Orchestra in 1964 through his father’s acquaintance embarking on his musical career.  For the next seven years he stayed with Cleveland Orchestra and accomplished to be the principal cellist there till 1971. The artist believes that after losing his parents he felt the need to share music with those who would appreciate it, a need that he now understands as he reflects back on his life.
In 1971, he made his recital debut and it was also the time when Harrell started teaching at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Slowly his music career began to build. His focus and capabilities made him a successful soloist. Besides his musical endeavors, the artist continued to teach at various schools and conducted classes to guide the burgeoning talents with his masterful skills. In 1975 he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize and thus he received international recognition. The 1980s was a period that saw Harrell rise as a star. He played at major concert halls with top-echelon orchestras and conductors.
Along with his music career his teaching career also grew. He went on to be part of the faculty at the Juilliard School of Music in 1976. At Royal Academy of Music in London, Harrell served as a principal for two years.  Aspen Music Festival has been an important part of his life as he spent 50 years with it, teaching and performing there.
