English singer and songwriter from Manchester, England, Steven Patrick Morrissey was born on May 22, 1959 to Irish Catholic immigrants. Throughout his life, he maintained a strong attachment to his mother and a strained relationship with his father.
Morrissey had a number of interests and role models while growing up that marked him out among his peers. Later, he based the controversially received track ?Suffer Little Children? on the Moors Murders of the early 1960s. Morrissey took up training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Renzo Grazie and currently holds his second degree black belt. His teenage was a time of loneliness and he began taking prescription drugs to help combat a lifelong depression.
Morrissey became the vocalist of the English band The Smiths in the 1980s and when the band broke up in 1987, Morrissey began a successful solo career, racking up ten Top 10 singles in the UK.
Morrissey's first solo album came in 1988 in the form of Viva Hate and he teamed up with former Smiths producer Stephen Street, Vini Reilly of Durutti Column and drummer Andrew Paresi.
