The O’Jays have been enjoying national and international success ever since they hit the music scene. Thus performing at concerts all over the world. They made their way into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and 2005 respectively. In 2006 the group made its presence known at the ESPY Awards. Since the advent of their career The O’Jays have produced many albums; Back Stabbers, Ship Ahoy, Survival, So Full of Love, Identify Yourself being some of the most successful ones. Back Stabbers, the 1972 release was a breakthrough album providing the group with the success and recognition they had been eyeing. Time to Get Down, Sunshine, Love Train, 992 Arguments and Back Stabbers turned out to be the biggest hits charting on US Pop Singles and Black Singles. The title track received a gold certification while stealing 318th spot on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Selling around 500,000 copies, the album ranked number 10 on US Billboard 200 and 3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums while also charting on Canadian charts. Referred to as “the pinnacle of Philly soul”, the album received positive reviews by almost all music critics including Allmusic, The Daily Vault, Virgin Encyclopedia, Rolling Stone 2004, MusicHound and Rhapsody.
Ship Ahoy was released in 1973 stealing the first position on US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. This Platinum certified album received rave reviews from the critics such as Allmusic, Rolling Stone 2004, New York Times, PopMatters, The Music Box and others. Delivering hits like Put Your Hands Together, For the Love of Money and Now that We Found Love the album was dubbed “masterpiece” with “stunning love songs” by Allmusic. Whereas Bass Player Magazine called it a “landmark”. It eventually came off as one of the highest selling albums of 1974.
Survival is another gold certified album with a number of prominent songs such as Let Me Make Love To You, Give the People What They Want, Survival and What Am I Waiting For. Hitting the shelves in 1975, the album reached number 1 on US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, 11 on US Billboard 200 while also charting in Australia and Canada.
So Full of Love came out in 1978 hitting the US Billboard 200 at 6 and US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums at number 1. It also found a spot on the Canadian charts at 83. Selling around 100,000 copies the album acquired a Platinum certification. Hence delivering songs like Use Ta Be My Girl, Brandy (I really miss you), This Time Baby and Sing My Heart Out. 1979’s Identify Yourself is another hit by The O’Jays that paved the way for two major hits; Sing a Happy Song and Forever Mine. Both the songs reaching 7 and 4 on US Hot R&B Hip-Hop Songs. The album hit the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at 3 and 16 on US Billboard 200. Hurry Up and Come Back and I Want You Here With Me are other singles from the album. It received Platinum certification after selling more than one million copies.
