Daughter of a Polish sheet-metal worker and and Irish beautician, Patricia Mae Andrzejewsk showed talent and great promise at a very early age. She wanted to attend the Juilliard School and pursue a career in music. Soon she changed her mind about music and attended a local college, which she quit at 19 to marry her sweet heart, Dennis Benatar, who was an army draftee. Pat started working at a bank but after visiting a Liza Minnelli concert she left the bank in hopes of making a career in music.
Initially she worked as a singing waitress, and also scored small gigs at night clubs. She got her big break while performing at an amateur night in a club in New York, when the club owners really liked her performance and asked her to come back for another. The club owner was Rick Newman, who later became her manager as well.
From there on she got parts in a few musicals in theater and got herself a few standing ovations. She kept singing in nightclubs and even did a few TV commercial jingles, including one for Pepsi Cola. It was at a night club that a few record labels approached her and she finally signed a contract with Chrysalis Records.
Even though Benatar’s initial training was in classical music, she experimented with rock, and soon began to excel in the genre. She won Grammys for “Best Female Rock Performance” for four consecutive years from 1981-84 for Crimes of Passion, Fire and Ice, Shadows of the Night and Love is a Battlefield” respectively. She was also nominated for Grammys for various other songs during her career.
After divorcing her first husband, Pat started dating Neil Giraldo, a guitarist and a producer, and they later married in Hawaii in 1982. They are happily married with 2 daughters. Neil accompanies her on almost all over her tours and adds to the magic. Seeing them together on stage lifts the crowd’s spirits and keeps their energy levels up.
