Pitbull’s long association with rap and dance began early at college. He aimed at becoming a rap singer, songwriter and producer. He became a self taught rapper inspired heavily by the Latin Rap/Soul and Tropical music. Celia Cruz and Willy Chirino remain his inspirational mentors to date. His label Mr 305 Inc is an effort to make rap and Latin hip hop more commercial.
Singing and performing rap he devised crunk in his original style. Kings of Crunk by Lil Jon, featured Pitbull ‘s irst performance in 2002. The solo single Oye , featured on the OST of 2 Fast 2 (2003) . Alongside Pitbull revamped and remixed the work of celebrated rappers .Showcasing freestyle hip hop and rap, these tapes helped Pitbull understand, create and recreate crunk. In 2001 Slip-N-Slide Records took Pitbull under its wing. He put together Welcome to the 305 , an unreleased album that remained unreleased. Its unofficial leaks took Pitbull’s sound to the commercial zone. Untill M.I.A.M.I. (2004) came; Pitbull was celebrated as the hottest public demand on the party and hip hop scene. Once the radio started airing crunk, Pitbull decided to come out of the cocoon. TVT Records released Pitbull’s first album featuring the song Culo . A quick chart topper and hot rap single, it reached No.32 and No.11 on Billboard. Other singles from the album Dammit Man, Toma , Back Up, and Lollipop also became hits.
Pitbull with Ying Yang, Twista and Pretty Ricks made combined acts. Hit The Floor and Everybody Get Up instantly rocketed at the Top Hot 100 calling for the release of album Money Is Still a Major Issue a Pitbut style remix . El Mariel(2006) his second release , a mix of politically themed songs and party tracks , topped at No.17 as an independent album. Collaborations here worth mentioning are of Wycleaf Jean and Ken-Y. The Boatlift (2009) fumed gangsta rap, featuring Loyd, Trina and Lil Jon. The singles Secret Admirer, Go Girl and The Anthem peaked at Top 100 and Top Rap charts. In 2010 Ultra Records produced Pitbull’s album Rebelution . It hit stands with a single I Know You Want Me and later Krazy, both peaked on Hot 100 and Hot Rap Tracks. It became a phenomenal hit in North America and Europe and topped the European Hot 100. Blanco and Hotel Room Service from the album featuring The Neptune’s Pharrell Williams stood at No.8 on Billboard Hot 100. These hits collectively made Rebelution the album and singles sell 7.5 million worldwide
Post Rebelution his studio recordings and live performances are mostly collaborations with stars like Gloria Estefan and Emilio, Cypress Hill, Marc Anthony, Alexandra Burke and Usher. Pitbull’s Armando (2009 ) became his first Latin album featuring a single collaborated with Enrique Iglesias. It managed numerous nominations for Latin Rhythm Airplay Awards . Pitbull became the winner of the Billboard Latin Music Award (2009) in the Latin Digital Download Artist of the Year category, Telehit Awards for the Most Popular Artist and the Premio Lo Nuestro Award (2011) in the Urban & General Artist of the Year category. Pitbull’s work has also earned is major nominations that include the ALMA award, MTV Music Awards, Billboard Latin Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, International Dance Music Awards, NRJ Music Awards a n d Teen choice Award. These nominations reflect upon his competence as well as fan following.
