Rod Stewart is a man who oozes charisma. Rock and Roll hall of Famer, Roderick David Stewart is a singer and songwriter born on January 10, 1945 in London, England. Characterized for a distinctive, raspy voice, Rod Stewart , throughout his almost forty-year career, has applied that unmistakable tone to material by everyone from the Rolling Stones to Tom Waits. He undoubtedly has one of the greatest voices in rock history.
Stewart rose to prominence in the late 1960s and early '70s with The Jeff Beck Group and then The Faces. He started off his solo career in 1969, and released his debut album titled An Old raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down.
With his career in its fifth decade, Rod has released numerous hit chartbusters worldwide. He garnered six consecutive number one albums in the UK. Stewart's tally of 62 hit singles includes 24 that secured the top 10, six of which achieved the number one position. 'Maggie May', 'You Wear It Well', 'Hot Legs', 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?', and 'Forever Young' are amongst his most-known hit singles. Anyone who has ever questioned how Rod Stewart pulls so many hot young and excited things together obviously hasn't watched him in the flesh.
Occupying a place on the list of best-selling music artists, it has been estimated that Rod's albums and single sales are over 250million. His biggest-selling single was a disco hit 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' issued in 1978. The song would mark the beginning of a blatantly commercial era for him. Stewart made a strong comeback with the release of his first rock album in over eight years, 'Still the Same Great Rock Classics of our Time' later. In this album, Rod takes ownership of a thoughtfully chosen set of songs written by masters like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bob Seger, and John Fogerty.
The album follows the unprecedented success of his Grammy-award winning Great American Songbook series. Stewart released four volumes of 'The Great American Songbook' between 2002 and 2005. With a total of fifteen million copies worldwide, the volumes comprise the biggest selling ongoing series of new music recordings in history.
Before joining ace guitarist Jeff Beck in 1968, Stewart and his impressively expressive, surprisingly versatile and distinctively throaty voice had been knowcking around the London club scene with such bands as Steampacket and Long John Baldry. This collaboration brought Stewart to the spotlight on the blazing Truth and Beck-Ola albums. For about six years, he would go back and forth between recording and touring with the Faces and launching his own largely successful solo career.
Before releasing these two albums, Stewart was known widely as a shouter. But, having released 'The Rod Stewart Album' (1969) and Gasoline Alley (1970), he revealed the range and artistry of a vocalist. 'Every Picture Tells a Story' (1971) was Stewart's universally acknowledged as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. The album includes his soulful, commanding takes on folk, R&B, and blues material; and the international number one smash single, 'Maggie May'. The album also demonstrated him as a top-flight songwriter.
In the following years in '80s and '90s, Rod Stewart would remain a consistent presence on the charts, with smashes like 'Young Turks', 'Forever Young', 'Downtown Train', and the massive 'All for Love' trio alongside Sting and Bryan Adams. Stewart, one of the biggest 'Superstars' of the century, has turned 63 without his audience thinning in any way.
