Ziggy Marley is a Jamaican reggae artist from Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica. He is the son of Bob Marley and best known in the reggae world for his amazing solo career and his career as a leader of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. Born as David Nesta Marley, he adopted his stage name from a nickname Bob Marley used to call him with. He is a singer, a songwriter and a musician who plays the piano, guitar and percussion. He is also a voice actor, lending his voice in a number of movies and productions. Ziggy Marley’s began back in 1979 when he and his siblings, as member of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, performed the song Children Playing in the Streets with Bob Marley. The band was then formed and it consisted of Cedella Marley, Sharon Marley and Stephen Marley as well. They then played for a number of years with their father and even performed at his funeral in 1981. Their first album was an LP titled as Play the Game Right, released through EMI Records. They then moved to Virgin Records as a band while he stayed with EMI as a solo artist. Three more albums were then released by the group; 1988’s Conscious Party, 1991’s Jahmekya and the very popular One Bright Day, released in 1989.
During the nineties, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers churned out two more successful albums. After that, he went on to release two highly successful solo studio albums; 2003’s Dragonfly and 2006’s Love Is My Religion. This album led to him winning a Grammy Award, his fourth, for having the Best Reggae Album. In 2009, he released a popular studio album, Family Time, released as a children’s album and starring a cast of appearances by the likes of Rita Marley, Judah Marley, Willie Nelson, Toots Hibbert and Elizabeth Mitchell. This album went on to win the Grammy Award for the Best Musical Album for Children.
To date, Ziggy Marley has released a good number of hit singles, some of which have ranked high on charts such as the Billboard Hot 100 and the Reggae music chart. His singles include Tomorrow People, People Get Ready, Drive and True to Myself. In 2011, he released an album titled as Wild and Free which featured famous artist Woody Harrelson. Outside of music, he has also released a comic book series titled as Marijuanaman with which the title single for Wild and Free was available for free.
Ziggy Marley is also very active as a philanthropist. Alongside the UN, he started a record label. He founded a charity known as URGE, standing for Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment, which has worked extensively in Ethiopia and Jamaica, helping children. He was also an official supporter of the not-for-profit organization, Little Kids Rock, which provided free music lessons and music instruments to children in public schools in the US. To this end, he visited children in the program and is a member of the board of directors of Little Kids Rock. He has also contributed to compilation albums such as For Our Children, a Disney album.
