Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show roots can be traced all the way back to the year 1877. A few hunters used to sit together at the Westminster Hotel in Manhattan, New York to discuss their hunting experiences and the prowess’s of their dogs. Soon they came up with a plan to form one of the first ever Kennel Clubs in the world and named it the Westminster Kennel Club. A Kennel club by definition is a body that governs and looks after various aspects of different dog breeds. They also look after various dog competitions like the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and approve the judges according to the standards devised by them. A Kennel Club also writes the rules on which a dog is judged as well as giving a breed an official status.
The first Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was held on 8th May, 1877 at the Gilmore’s Garden. The event was a success right from the word go with the debut event being attended by twelve hundred canines. That debut event was scheduled to be held over three days but the overwhelming response it got took the show to an extra day.
When the American Kennel Club came into existence in 1884, the Westminster Kennel Club was the first club to become a member of the AKC. The dogs at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show are judged on various standards and according to specific guidelines. Every breed has its own standards which are called breed standards. These standards are reviewed regularly to incorporate changes according to any new information received to make sure the standards are not out-dated.
When the AKC was formed it was made mandatory for every dog participating to be registered with the association. As the show became more popular with every year that went by the criteria for entering the event was changed even more in 1992. According to this new rule change a dog can only enter the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show if it has already at some point in the past earned its respective breed championship. This rule is still enforced to this very day.
As the profile of the show started to grow so did the participants so there was a need to find a bigger venue to hold the event. The Madison Square Garden was chosen as the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show’s new home in 1926 where it has stayed to this very day. The venue is not the only thing that has changed over the years.
The number of dogs that can take part in the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is just over two thousand because of space constraints and strict entrance qualifications. According to the entrance rule changes in 1992 only the top five canines of a specific breed are allowed to take part in the competition. The dog show is now held over a two day period in February every year and is now in its 136th consecutive season. The popularity generated over the years has helped it get more exposure by being broadcasted live since 1948.
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has been a huge success since its inception. It is now the second longest running sporting event in U.S. history which is simply a sensational achievement.
