Eaves took charge of the team as its 12 th head coach in 1949 and remained on that position till 1963. He coached the team for fourteen seasons and during that time, the team managed to claimed 213 wins overall, making him the winningest coach of the team to date. It was also during his tenure when Tigers claimed their first SEC title in 1960. After Eaves, Sonny Smith is the most successful coach of the team who coached for 11 seasons. It was under his leadership when the team made it to their first SEC Tournament Championship. In 1984 and 1989, he was also crowned the title of Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year. Currently the team is being coached by Tony Barbee, who took charge in 2010.
